Bought the MS290 off of Guidosalvage and it arrived today packaged nicely. Got to say it was a pleasure doing business with him.

Figured I had never owned one before and since it seems to be a popular saw around here it would be a fun little project to work on. I was pleased that it was in even better shape than I had imagined. I will be tearing it down for a really good cleanup, fuel line and filter replacement and most likely be rebuilding the carb. I am actually going to tackle a muffler mod on this one too so get ready for a few questions as I tear into this thing Already got the service and owners manual thanks to one of our awesome mods!

Thats a nice saw, way under rated. I've had an 029 super I bought new that has been the best saw for me. you will make a lot of firewood with that. nice score!

That is a very nice 290! Congrats.

Never hesitate to ask questions. That's the #1 reason this Forum exists. To help and educate. Makes a nice place to hang and shoot the breeze as well. But we all learn from one another

Looking forward to you digging into that saw! They are pretty straightforward and easy to work on. And with a Muff mod, a good runner!!

Anyway that thing sure is clean and in good shape.

The muffler made is easy and will really wake it up. It will make that thing cut like a 390 once modded

I was very happy with the shape it is in!
Really looking forward to playing around with it and once I have it running well stock I will move on to the muffler mod. I know it's not a pro saw but I figured it should be fun.

Yeah that's the one. You can open it up even more if you want but you start making irreversible compromises like not being able to utilize the screen and very noticeably elevated noise levels. All well and good with the saw enthusiast crowd but if you're going to resell an 029/290 for top dollar, it's not likely going to be someone a saw nut that mixes oil in his coffee as your buyer. ;)

Make it run strong, reasonably quiet, and clean it up pretty. It'll fetch a good price, just make sure you use the phrase "Farm Boss" a LOT in the ad.

Well we will see if I sell it. I was thinking of replacing then 450 with this as I figured it would be better but then I found the 357xp and I'm thinking I might like it better.

Either way I want to get it how I want it and run it through some wood to see how it runs. Everyone around here acts like this is the best saw ever made and I want to see what the hype is all about. Maybe make a few timed cuts against the 357.

I was in the stihl and husky dealership the other day looking at a 550xp and they were trying to sell me one of these as a better saw .

It may be the best homeowner saw ever made.......... but it's no pro saw. It will bring top dollar on craigslist though :)

BTW, what's up with the "272 in pieces"? (insert photo of vultures circling).

Yep I routinely see "farm bosses " selling for $200-350, even the 029. The dang thing is $400 on sale new???

It runs great I had it running less than two weeks ago however I can't get the darn tank vent to stop leaking so it has been torn down multiple times. I have ordered the tank vent that says it should fit but doesn't and three other vents just to try them and non of them work. I'm seriously considering epoxying it in place and forgetting about it. It's an older saw with a new piston and rings.
