I have seen a lot of posts lately about Woodstock stoves. Do they make a decent model with small clearance requirements? I frankly can't afford any stove that needs an 18 inch back clearance like the Fireview.

Depends on what you call small clearance and you can get heat shields. Can't tell you off the top of my head what the requirements are for the different stoves. The Fireview requires 18" with the heat shield which is not bad considering you need room for the flue too and that is 10" from the wall. For a corner install it is 12" from the corner to the wall for clearance.

I could get the clearance requirements for you if you wish.

The fireview would have been on my hearth if it weren't for the silly big clearance requirements which I think is largely due to the rear exit flue. Now that top exit flue stoves are available, things are better. Worth considering is that side door only stoves have really small front hearth requirements.

This is a very interesting project. Congrats to Woodstock and the EPA for working to a solution for the Navajo American Indians.

    Proud of you Woodstock!

What's odd about Woodstock - they make boxes yet think outside these boxes.

This is really a great project making a huge difference for those folks.

The Woodstock posting from today was really eye opening to see the old stove and how dangerous the installation was. I'm glad they have a safe install now and a beautiful new stove.

I think they may post more in their blog too but probably after they return from the SW.

fishingpol you are right about that one install. It is sort of what I expected they'd find though.

As much as these stoves may benefit the environment and the Navajo people. I have to wonder of there is a viable market for them to the point of making it worth Woodstock's effort to gear up to manufacture them.

I just question weather there is a population that can afford and be willing to pay for a stove in the price range this stove might require. Maybe the EPA is putting some $kin in the game to help fund a large number of installations.

My guess would be, huge tax credits or supplements to offset the cost. If I remember correctly some people could get an ideal steel for around $600 because of all the tax credits.

There's a lot of places toward the middle of the country where coal is still easier to get than firewood. I'm not sure which direction it is going though. It may depend on politics as much as anything else.

With the type of equipment they have now I doubt it was that much of a problem.

Coal is a still very popular heating choice in North East Pennsylvania. Though most coal stoves around here are "stokers" & use the rice sized coal. Being in the heart of anthracite country, I love the idea of being able to burn coal and wood. However when I was in the market for a new stove, the dual fuel stoves just were not efficient enough for my preferences. So I ended up with an Ideal Steel.

I'll be interested to see if this new stove can burn anthracite (hard coal) in addition to its soft coal counterpart that it was designed for.
