I just wanted to pass this along

Hi there – It's Dr. Jon here. I wanted to give you an update on the recent deadly treat issue.

You may have heard in the news today that over 600 dogs have died and over 3,500 so far are sick which is linked to jerky treats made in China, as per federal animal health officials (this was released 10/22/13).

They have also identified that this affects cats – with more than a dozen being affected to date.

Dogs affected have been of all ages, sizes and breeds. They believe the illness occurs after eating chicken, duck and sweet potato jerky treats made in China. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) officials are trying to determine the specific brands of treats affected and the causative agent.

I received a letter from the FDA asking for my help. They want veterinarians that treat a pet they believed are ill due to jerky treats – to send any detailed information including blood and urine test results.
Signs of illness can include Gastrointestinal upset in 60% of the affected pets and about 30% show signs of kidney failure or urinary problems.

For more information – please read:
Signs may include vomiting, diarrhea, lack of appetite, increased thirst, increased urinations, lethargy, or weakness.

Officials from the FDA are seeking help form pet owners and veterinarians to help figure out what and why this is happening. According to the FDA's Center for Veterinary Medicine, testing for contaminants have not identified the causes for the illness.

If you have had a recall, and you are concerned, please contact your veterinarian. I have a link to report a problem in your pet here.
Here is a list of recent recalls:

As daunting as it may seem, people are working very hard to isolate these issues, and resolve them quickly.

For details on this newest recall – go to New Food and Treat Recalls.

This is just a reminder for you to check the list frequently. I'd recommend that you review it each time you buy new pet food or treats just to be safe.

I'll keep you updated as more information develops.

    Until next time,

    Dr. Jon

P.S. Please forward this to a friend – I'd really like to get the word out.

Yah, I heard about this on my truck radio the other day. My cat does not get any jerky treats, and never has.

Good of you to share this HD. We do not feed our dogs treats of any kind. Only dry dog food. But a lot of people do and should be able to do it safely.

For years now, the only treats my dogs been getting are pork rinds. They're cheap and the dogs absolutely love them. Their whole day is spent thinking about the pork rinds they'll get in the evening. Also, they won't make your dog fat like regular dog treats will.

We have a dehydrator ,, we make a big batch of jerky from a roast we'll cut up... makes a lot and plus we know what they are getting, and we can eat it as well.. Just keep it kind of plain so the dogs can have it... works out great.. A lot cheaper then buying it in the store..

Same here. I know of a family that lost their dog from eating food from china. For me, we make it or it is American made.

I remember 3-4 years back the stories about Chinese toothpaste, car tires & other things.Plus I'm sure you've all heard about their Stihl & Husqvarna knockoffs as well... C'mon... Is it really worth the risk to our & those we care about's health just to save a couple bucks?

Sheetrock. Sheetrock from China was full of sulfur. Many new houses had to be re-rocked because of that stuff. They are always selling stuff from China for cheaper though, because of the most favored nation status by the US. It has gone through the courts, but the Chinese just blow us off:

That's the other thing I couldn't remember. Now I recall hearing about the various lawsuits etc towards certain homebuilders.Don't think there was any in my area.Havent needed to buy any drywall in prob 20 years, hopefully when I can afford to tear out & replace some of the old plaster ceiling near the attic that US drywall will still be found.I know that all the big commercial interior contractors here only use domestic supplies.Of course their projects & clients are used to a different standard of quality & codes than the residential builders.I seen new houses that were close to a million dollars (back 4-5 years ago before the recession) and you wouldn't believe how shoddy some of their work was. OSB instead of exterior plywood for sheathing as 1 example....

Yah, same here. I buy US Sheetrock made here from quality gypsum. The zillion dollar houses here are all built with OSB, and they even put OSB down for second floor decking and it gets rained on (for months). The OSB warps, and after they put a roof on they dry them out with fans, and use a planer and sanders to 'level' the floors. So the flooring is all pre-water warped OBS! Standard building practice here. Many of the slap-'em-up houses that were built in projects during the boom circa 2005 are all having to be resided, or re-roofed, re-rocked, or re-leveled. How you get 3 inches off level in a new house is beyond me, but I know a builder that makes big money re-leveling houses. "Imported" labor...
