I've been lurking on your great site for a few months now, and decided it's time to make my first post. I originally found the site while doing research on a new wood stove. My wife and I are looking to build a new home, and I wanted to heat with wood...and she agreed. I have learned so much in my limited time here, and grateful for all the shared knowledge. We currently have an open fireplace, which we love to use, but hate the loss of heat. I am looking to fix that with an insert or actual wood stove, dependent upon when/if we sell and build. Anyway, I have been bitten by the hoarding bug, if that's a thing. I find myself constantly looking on CL for free wood. My in-laws have quite a bit of wood stacked in rounds that they want gone, so I've been filling my truck every chance I get. I'm just getting started, but you have to start somewhere, I suppose. I actually couldn't sleep last night because I was thinking I should be splitting the rounds that are laying in the driveway. And, since you all like pics, here is my processing setup that I put together when I had a couple hours on Saturday morning. I have since split a few rounds, but you get the idea.
Haha, me too. Westfield, to be exact. You? EDIT: You're on INGO too, correct? Your name looks familiar.
Noblesville. If you ever need a hand with wood gathering, processing, etc, let me know. I'm over that way all the time.
Btw, when you start stove shopping, omalia's in carmel is the highest priced place around. Lousy service imo also. They were $1000 higher than anyone on my parents install. Check out RT's fireplace shop in plainfield, or there's a place in Anderson which the name of escapes me right now. There's one in Zionsville also, the cinder box, she seems slow to get my parts when needed...but close by at least. Hope that will get you started.
Yep get a start on drying out that wood. When you get a stove it will make a huge difference. I was lucky because I knew I was going to build a house 5 years before I did it. During that time I already had the property and by the time the house was built I already had wood that was cut and stacked going back 4 years.
Welcome pjcalla, am a noob too and been bitten by the wood hoarding bug as well. Although the winds kinda been taken out of my sails as I am in the same boat as you with the open FP. Kills me to keep burning knowing it's so inefficient and my furnace runs even more. Just gonna burn occasionally until I see what my next move is with a stove or insert.
welcome pjcalla ... I see your a hand splitter.. yeah this place teaches you quick, certainly did me!
Welcome to the forum pjcalla And while you are looking, don't forget to look online at Woodstock Soapstone as they have some terrific stoves in either soapstone or steel. Some of these stoves are great installed in the fireplaces. A new wood burner too should look at this: Primer on Woodburning by Backwoods Savage
Welcome to the forum pjcalla. In the midwest you can find a complete set of stove pipe and chimney at your local Menard's. I was not impressed with their stove selection and ended up buying one on line.
