So, I bit the bank account and purchased a Solo Bonfire firepit. I love this thing already. I won't miss the bucks I spent on it. There may even be a second one in my future.

In the picture you can pretty clearly the secondaries lighting off.

An even better look at the secondaries lighting off.

I've never looked into them. Are there cold air intakes on the outside?

Nice new toy there RB. How much? How good does it toast a marshmallow?

It's double wall construction with intake holes around the bottom. The wood sits on a perforated platform that is fed air from the intake holes around the bottom. There are outlet holes around the inside top that produce the secondaries.

When you add wood, after it reaches operating temps, the smoke normaly produced in a firepit is converted to secondary flames that extend into the center from all around the holes at the top. It's quite a show.

It's the mid-sized model. The inside diameter is 17" and the outside is 19". I'll have to make some 10" and 12" wood to go along with the 16" stuff I usually use. And smaller splits.

I bought it from Solo in a "bundle deal" for $289.00 plus tax, shipping was free. The deal included a base so it can be used on a deck and a zip up cover to keep in when not in use. Something like $307 after tax.

:salute:. No sir, but I figure it will take me four hours or so. I've been putting it off for quite some time now. I have barrels sitting under snow right now.

Havent they used washing machine drums for firepits like this? Work on the same principle?

Seems like all you would need to do is drill holes in the outer, larger barrel bottom edge then drill holes in the bottom and around the the top of a smaller barrel, then put the smaller inside the larger, outer barrel.

Pictures when you get it built! Good luck! :salute:

I've seen firepits made from washer and drier drumbs but never as a 'secondary burn' type firepit. After using this I don't see how they would work. Seems like the are too many holes in the burn drum and no outer drum.

Wow! That is truly awesome. I’d definitely want to be out using it more than just a normal old pit. Pics are great too. Thanks for sharing Ralphie Boy

Yep, that’s all ours is. Reclaimed stainless washing machine drum.
But I kept it stock- the single wall of the drum is all there is- which allows heat to radiate and warm from the ankles up.
Ralphie Boy - during your initial burns, have you noticed your lower extremities getting warmed well? Too well?
My concern there would be the double wall setup- because ultimately air insulates… and if I’m sitting around a fire pit, I don’t like my lower legs getting cold while my face is practically melting.
    Make sense?

Our single wall drum in fact produces secondaries.
