It was 37" DBH, totally solid, not a spec of rot. or bug damage besides some branches that had been trimed prior. I was really expecting to see a big hollow mess. The tree stood about 10' off my property but it was delivered cut. There were 22 of rounds like this plus the crown wood that didn't go into the chipper pretty much everything is 8" or more. The crew was lucky that it is downhill into my yard, one kick and a steering shove and their work was done. They bucked it up with a 660 that made short order of the log. I couldn't imagine trying it with my lowly 029. (The leaf was nice enough to sneak into the photo. I didn't pose it.) On top of the 'short' load of logs I got a week ago I have quite a bit of wood on deck. This will probably last me into '18. What you see is about 6 hours of my time + 1.5 gallons of fuel + bar oil and a pair of gloves. Split and stacked a small amount of it today. Maybe a half cord. It stacks up fast when you get 18 splits from a round, and I haven't made it to the big ones yet.
That is really good. Anytime delivery is taken care of, you are way ahead. You said it was bucked up. How sweet is that! Your wood " bank " account just got a lot fatter.
That many rounds of red oak just rolled into your yard?..thought I was spoiled at my private wood dump
Yes, complimentary loads of wood are delivered here from just about any tree service. I usually get logs from one guy, that lets me use my saws and I can have uniform cut lengths. Half of what is in that picture is a log load from him that I cut up last weekend. Getting cut rounds is hit or miss as they are usually cut to all different lengths and you wind up with a pile of odd length uglies after trimming them. These guys did a pretty good job of making things uniform as I was doing them a massive favor of letting them use gravity to unload their slag.
A "10 foot delivery" Gotta be a record for shortest! Nice score. Those rounds will make some beautiful splits
Nice work. Man you have a serious stash of wood there if you are good through 2018? How much do you go through in a year?
I burn a little more than 3 cords a year, unless winter lingers like it did last year. So unless we get a few long winters in a row this will probably get me through to January '18. I'll know better after I get all this stacked up. I do know I need to go get some more pallets. At any rate I'm certainly going to be low on 'shoulder season' wood.
I split everything I can that way even if it leaves weird shapes out of the rest of the round. 7 splits filling a 4.3 cu ft firebox is where its at when its cold and blowing. I've gotten 140 pounds in the firebox this way when I'm doing well to get 90 in with regular shaped splits. Big Oak and Beech seem to cooperate best when trying to make railroad ties.
