Sorry for the crappy picture; but this is a chimney from my neighborhood. If his truck wasn't in the drive, I would've taken a few more pix. Normally this chimney is coated with soot down the pipe, onto the the storm collar, then onto the flashing and then down the roof to the eave. What you don't see from this picture is that the chimney is leaning away from where I took this at about a 10-15* angle!!!! Often times I see a fresh load of rounds dumped, then a day or two later, they're split and stacked ready to smolder in his stove!!!! IMG_0353.jpg

Last spring was the first time I struggled with wet wood. And it wasn't green, but did need another year, I don't get it !?! It was difficult to light, hard to keep going, was stinky and less heat, what a pain in the rear!

I think that scenario you just described is where the phrase.................."Holds the fire longer." ................comes from!!!

Because you have to "work" to keep the wood LIT!!!!!!:headbang::loco:

There's a guy across the street from my farm who constantly has thick gray smoke pouring out of his chimney. He has a big pile of wood stacked in his driveway but it seems like it needs to sit a while longer before he burns it.

And look how short that chimney is. For sure there is a disaster in the making.

For sure!!! The part of the roof where his chimney exits looks like about a 4/12 pitch roof...............same as mine. And mine exits about the same place up the pitch also.........................but I have about 7.5ft. of class A above where it exits my roof to get the minimum recommended chimney height for my 13NC. ]

    Just saying of course!!

When he has a chimney fire, just hope and pray your home isn't too close to catch fire itself.
And I hope he can get out in time. How do you nicely say to your neighbor, "your doing it all wrong"
    without pizzing him off.

I see my share of smokey chimneys around here, not that it's any of my business. With the old stove I had smoke coming out of my chimney at times, even with dry wood.
I remember some mornings, I'd start up a fresh load and a column of smoke would make it's way down and across the road. When cars would drive through it they'd leave swirling smoke tails behind. If I lived in a residential area, I probably would've been very self conscious about my smoke.
I guess if I hadn't had an older stove it would be easier for me to criticize those that do.

From what I've observed, it seems most people around here cut their trees down in the spring and split them up in the fall.

Strike up a friendly conversation with your neighbor and bring up the fact that he burns wood. Then mention that you a member of a great forum that discusses everything there is to know about burning wood and everything associated with wood burning. Tell him there is a wealth of information and that he should consider checking it out.

...but not before you delete this thread ;)

It's a shame but we talk about this a lot. Some just really don't know any better and some don't want to know any better. Lastly some know it all and you can't tell them any different which comes often from past on info or old tales that they have accepted as fact.

Looks like my neighbors set up, he gets his green wood dumped in his driveway in October and burns it that year. He's burning a smoke dragon so it does burn, he told me he bought a new hearthstone for his upstairs but it doesn't burn well and doesn't throw heat. I told him to try a few wheelbarrows of my wood and let me know how it burns, he's never taking me up on the offer.

FHC should make a publication on wood burning myths. Green wood, wet wood, pine, hedge, burning out the chimney to clean it, what else?

My neighbor was like that before. He got a new(er) stove last year. I gave him some of my odds and ends of walnut that was dry, that I really didn't want to move and burn. Well, about a month later he was asking if I had anymore of that good wood to burn. He'd never had such good burning wood. So I sold him a cord of some Ash... And he's happy and wanting more...:picard:

He lives in my neighborhood, but is not a "neighbor". This is an easy 3/4 mile from my dump.

Lots of................................let's call it, "Polish-American engineering" once I started making it "my" house rather than the prior owners house..................if you know what I mean.:whistle::D For instance..............an extension cord used as wiring within an interior wall, et.al!!!!!!!!

I can say that though.......................half of my ancestry is Polish!!!!!:thumbs:

I resemble that remark! Seriously, we have polish ancestry too and the jokes at family gatherings were hilarious! Also, we are currently rehabbing a "depression era handyman's special" home. YEP, we had the extension cords ran through a hole in the wall for the porch light

How about you making a list and sending it to me? I may start on this project soon if time allows.
