Concitering putting a pellet burner in my shop but know nothing about them. Will be heating about a 1000 sq ft Looking for something I can just stick the pipe out the wall don't have a chimney and not going to put one up. Don't need the best but don't want something trouble some eather . Need advise.... thanks !
ECsaws Since this is not for heating the house, you probably should check on a place like Craig's List in your area for a used one (see below). Should be some stoves for sale this time of year. Most are sold by owners who didn't understand the need to clean them periodically and when they stop working or the heat output goes down, they sell them. By "shop", do you mean basement or garage? Unfinished basements are VERY hard to heat, due to the cold mass of concrete/block that soaks up the heat. Also, local codes usually don't allow them in a garage. I'd look for an Englander ....a 25PDVC should do nicely, and since Lowes & HD sell them, they are the ones you see a lot for sale used pretty cheap. Parts are easy to get, and Englander cust. service is the BEST in the industry. Mike Holton is their senior tech and is a member of this forum. Here's an example of one available in my area: http://hudsonvalley.craigslist.org/app/5031217662.html As for the exhaust, straight out is OK, but out & up about 4' is the best. Many times, like the above ad, buying a used stove includes some pipe and/or floor protection.
Agree with everything imacman Has to say except I would go with the PAH due to its larger hopper. You should be able to find used ones fairly cheap.
Thanks guys , it for my saw shop , no windows one man door and one roll up that opens into car garage, 8" of blown in insulation, heats easy...I'll keep a eye out on CL but I don't get much internet time anymore so if someone spots one in north central Ohio I'd appricate the heads up. Thanks again for the info !
I thought of that, but they are much less common to find for sale used. The PDVC's are everywhere. And a 60 lb. hopper extension is available aftermarket on both eBay or Amazon for about $125. Depending on what he wants to spend, there's also the refurb route that many of us have used: http://www.amfmenergy.com/55trp10--epa-certified-pellet-stove--1555101501.html http://www.amfmenergy.com/55trpah--epa-certified-pellet-stove--2000552000.html
Here's a dual fuel corn/pellet Englander that includes a direct vent pipe. You guys have pretty good access to corn out there, right? http://sandusky.craigslist.org/grd/5036147530.html If you call the guy and get the serial #, a call to Englander will get you exactly when it was made. The guy says he "needs to sell", so maybe an offer of $400-450 might snag it.
I will look on our local CL. I have been burning pellets for 7 years and if I had to choose between wood and pellets? Pellets would be my choice. It's to easy. You would want about 40,000 BTU min for your shop (if its the one I was in). Along with auto ignite and a big hopper (50-60 lbs min). I will be in touch this week of I find something.
Not all deem it mandatory. It helps in the event of a power outage, but a straight out install is fine with numerous models. It's easy and cheap.
Not sure where you are located, but here is something that might work as a shop heater. I feel kind of bad for this furnace as it looks to have had a hard life. (I wonder if it comes with the aluminum dryer duct which appears to have been used as a wall thimble). But seriously, for $350 this would be hard to beat for a shop heater. http://grandrapids.craigslist.org/for/5047139726.html
Poor thing!! Needs to go home with someone that will take much better care of her. $350(even if it needs an overhaul) sounds like a steal!!
I appricate the offer Dex but that's a little far I'm sure something will show up closer to home eventually. I'd conciter looking at a neighbors saw I'm booking work now for Dec.
You tell me when you're ready and I will bring it over and a case of beer. Always good times shooting the chit with you! Till then, I'll keep my eyes open and ear to the ground for a good stove.
