My local Stihl dealer stocks NOTHING. So what should I order online from the aftermarket?

I’m a fan of oem stuff. Aftermarket is a crap shoot.

Here’s the difference between rim and spur in case you didn’t know. W/ a rim, you can simply replace the “sprocket”. On a spur drive, you have to replace the entire drum.

They can order it I would imagine. You are either waiting on it if they order it or if you order it.

Absolutely sick and tired of this stihl bull****. I sincerely regret buying this brand.

So is there a china knockoff I can buy for sprockets so I can avoid this hassle?

I don’t buy Chinese counterfeit products for my saws so I can't help you there. Someone already listed where you can order what you need up above.

Well, I was hoping to convert to the rim drive but if I can't get replacement rims it is of no use to me. I'll wait to see if anyone else has a suggestion before I just go ahead and order the spur gear wolverine posted.

I'll gladly buy chinese counterfeit products if my alternative is to drive an hour each way to a competent stihl dealer or put an order in by my local dealer and get blown off for two weeks and then told my stuff is never coming (true story!).

Anyone want to buy a very gently used MS251 so I can get an Echo?

It’s not exclusive to Stihl. When I first started out I had a great Husky dealer very close. Stocked lots of stuff, awesome place. They got bought out by a chain store called Messicks. Went there a couple times for small stuff, have to order everything. Bad part was, and I don’t know if this changed, they told me they had to wait to place an order till they got $50 minimum. I quit going there and buy online now and some stuff gets to me in about a week. They also wouldn’t budge from 100% suggested retail price.

And sorry, I'm not being intentionally obtuse. It just took me a long time to understand chain and bar specs and I still only have a tenous grasp on that. I just don't know how to find the correct matching part to this sprocket.

    Stihl OEM Spur Sprocket .325" 7T MS 251 231 241 1143-640-2002 | eBay

is just the OEM rim sprocket. kinda spendy. I've actually found that some parts are cheaper at the dealer...

It has also been my experience that the rim sprockets last longer than the spur sprockets since they float side to side better on the clutch drum. The spurs tend to start a wear spot and then lock in on the spur at that spot and then eat it out quickly once the wear starts. hoping this makes sense but that's been my experience. I switch everything over to rim sprocket style and get much better life out of a rim sprocket.

Maybe I've been lucky, but I never noticed a whole lot of difference in wear / longevity on OEM vs. knock off sprockets, but I have gotten a couple after market rim sprockets that were out of round a little. Just enough to notice tight, loose, tight, loose while rotating the chain during sharpening. Not sure if it matters much while cutting but I've tossed 1 or 2 out of a bag of 5 for that reason. I think I have spares of spares for everything anymore...

Count the points on your original spur drum. If it's 7 points, get a 7. If it's 8, get 8. My guess is its 7.
