I don't know about coughs in particular but a mixture of whiskey and honey was used for something. Since after taking it you might fall asleep you might not hear yourself cough.
Honey. In warm tea might be soothing too. It works on my lil one (not for under 1 y/o). It's now quite popular as cold medicines have been taken off the market for them.
Horseradish is an expectorant. (Meaning it will break up the mucus so your cough is more effective.) I am not a huge fan of suppressing the cough, and get really confused by mucinex which is an expectorant and suppressant??? Any warm liquids will also aid in the "loosening" of mucus, chicken broth/stock works wonders.
I would recommend warm whiskey and honey but since you dont drink any warm beverage and also take a spoonful of honey by itself this should help to soothe the cough and your throat. I also had a guy from Mexico on the job once that was drinking lime juice and he said it helped so thats worth a shot.
I second the horseradish as an expectorant and lemon/honey/tea to soothe your throat. Noth sure they actually supress your cough much, but it will stop your from coughing just because your throat is sore. If you want real supression, steep some whole cloves in with your tea-- should give you some numbness. Mint will do that to a lesser extent.
My brother swears by the honey he gets from his hives, he mixes it with cinnamon. for coughs I tried it once and couldn't really tell a difference, but I had the worst cough in my life at the time and nothing really helped.
Stay away from everyone..............especially the snot-gobblers (kids)................and you won't get sick!!!!
Your body is coughing because it needs to to fight off whatever critter is making you sick. Good tune-up for the abs too. Embrace it.
My house is like a germ warfare factory with 3 of my own kids plus a cousin my wife watches and the 2 neighbor kids come over a lot.
