I stop over at my friends house to pick up some car parts and go around to his backyard and there are 2 trees that fell over on the edge of his property. One is a BIG persimmon (18" dia base and very tall...or was tall...long now) and the other a decent (10" dia base) black cherry. I usually only get stuff on my place which involves moving on some steep hilly land in the middle of nowhere with only a few level spots, mostly around the terraces. He lives near town in a "subdivision" and it's nice and flat and maybe 100ft from the road. I have a dentist appt. for a cleaning in the middle of March, so of course I'll need to take an entire sick day... He said I could come over and cut it up and haul it off and he might even call out sick too that day.. Should completely fill the bed of the truck. Are these pretty good firewood finds? I haven't burned any of either type yet, have several of each species growing on my place, several pretty big ones, but I won't cut down a healthy tree when there's stuff already laying on the ground or standing dead. I'm just glad that for once it's some easily accessible wood.
If it is a persimion, it's one of the highest BTU scores you can get... Persimion is often confused with black gum however.
Thanks and I have been looking for a that chart...found it once and couldn't remember the site. Persimmon is higher than hickory and both species of locust? I might cut down the other 4 on the vacant lot that this big one fell over from...
Cherry is great, quick drying wood. It smells great too. I've got no experience with persimmon, but every chart I trust lists it as higher BTUs than any oak. Easy to haul, a helper, and it helps someone else out? Wins all around!
I don't know about that. This is the only chart I've seen that lists shagbark hickory, and the locusts that low. Ironwood is great too, but not as good as shag. There's a lot of inconsistencies in the chart we have here.
That's the way to look at it.......stop sweet talkin the old horse just give it the spurs and get down the trail.....black horse, white horse or gray all good for a ride.
The price is going to be burning: 2 gallons of diesel, a small quantity of 2 stroke fuel and chain oil, a couple of cheap cigars, and 8 hours of sick time... I found the "tops" of the persimmon fruit...I actually saved one and took a picture. I had a thread previously trying to identify a tree that fell over and I cut up (haven't burned it...next year) and wasn't sure if it was black gum, persimmon, or sourwood. I looked for leaves around it, took much variety, but found these same things around that tree as well. It seems like these trees grow in "groves"...and I'm not complaining.
I think I can pick up one of these kits on Amazon.. I see you're in Wythville...I'll be making a hard right hand turn there, circle off 81 and onto 77 and head to southern WV Thurs. afternoon.
I'll be coming through during the day. I do travel through there quite often...every few months...and the State Police love 81. That area from the NC state line up to Beckley WV is really nice.
Be careful cutting there. Someone else already owns that wood. If you do that on my place you might get a visit from the gendarmes.
