It will keep the mess in the box.

No he won't but he has to inspect the wood every time I bring it in

That will help keep the mess contained
My wood box is ply wood & catches lots of dirt , bark &
    wood debris
    Lots easier cleanup

We have a small 2'x4' metal stock tank. Takes a lot of abuse.

HDR, does that have wheels on it? Where'd you find it?
I made the mistake of building a wood rack to put next to the stove under a window. Used it exactly one year. One too many.
Soooooo much crap underneath and a pain to keep the floor clean.
Somewhat better this year now that I've gone back to the "washtub", but still not quite right.
Need something taller that the dogs can't get into. They pull bark from splits and dig to the bottom of the tub for bark.
I can't keep kindling in the house.
    Dang dogs.

That is funny Dave. My dogs do the same thing outside. This was the last year with the wood piles inside the fenced in yard. They are going outside of it so that every time I go to mow the lawn I don't have to spend fifteen minutes picking up sticks, bark, and small logs! Dang dogs! :D

I need to come up with a decent box for my basement and a type of ramp or slide to slide the wood down to it. I would like to do that by opening the window that is there already and use it instead of cutting another hole through the wall for a chute.

    Edit : no wheels
I like to have some wood in the house for the morning load, last year I had a rack , made a big mess .
I looked for one that would fit the space I was going to put it in.
I bring the wood in with a log bag so some of the crap stays in the bag, the rest stays in the tub
This tub has a latching lid , but I don't use it, that could keep the dogs out, got it at office depot $27.99, Rubbermaid® Clever Latching Tote, 36 Gallons, Blue
They have em at amazon too, http://www.amazon.com/Rubbermaid-Clever-Latching-Tote-Gallons/dp/B005G9C5S0

I got one of these for out on the porch for kindling, from menards, $17.97, 50 Gallon Rough Tote With Lid Rough Tote W/ Lid, it has a snap lock lid

I have 6 large storage bins indoors filled with lumber cut-offs. Always keep my kindling dry
