It is nice to have found this forum, at least I know I'm not the only one.

We live to the east of Atlanta, GA.

A little about me. I've owned a 20" Craftsman chainsaw since back in the early 80's and a 16" Homelight for taking care of the small stuff around the 4 acres - we've always got something that needs cutting, trimming, etc.

I think we bought a cord of wood many years ago, early 90's or so. We have a standard fireplace that surprisingly does give off a lot of heat. The wife will have a fire when its 60 outside at night that will run us out of the house or force us to open windows to cool off. We've had some small maple rounds that we've been burning, but hadn't invested in even a maul. We happened to be at Lowes around Christmas and I noticed the 27 ton log splitter as we walked in the door - mentioned to the wife it would be nice but was just a lot more than I wanted to spend on something I would only use occasionally.

Fast forward to Christmas day, low and behold a nice 27 ton splitter. I spent Christmas afternoon splitting the little wood we had.

Since then, scouring Craigslist, I've come across a cord of fresh cut White Oak, 3/4 cord of fresh cut Red Maple, 1/2 cord of Maple (standing, dead and somewhat seasoned), 1/2 cord of Red Oak and most recently 1/2 cord or more of fresh cut Hickory. We've got more wood than we have ever had and can hardly wait to burn it!

This forum has been a great resource - wanted to say thanks to everyone who contributes and it's nice to know I'M NOT ALONE!

My daughter's think I'm nutts! But at 54, it's still a lot of hard work and exercise, loading rounds of hard and wet wood into the back of the long bed 3500, unloading it, moving it to the splitter, stacking it, etc. The easiest part by far is sitting there splitting the wood. My sore body is evidence that I'm getting exercise, much needed exercise.

I've been lurking here for a couple of weeks and have found a great wealth of information - heck my wife and daughters know I am 'part of the club' lol. They just shake their heads.......

My wife doesn't shake her head anymore, it's 'understod' now. :)

question: are you splitting vertical or horizontal on your new 27 ton?
You mentioned a sore body, that's why I asked

I split both vertical and horizontal depending on what I'm splitting. Whole rounds? Vertical, especially if they are large.

The body aches from loading the wood from the curb or yard onto the truck - gravity is the enemy. Gravity is my friend however, when it comes to pushing the wood out of the truck. The back hurts from the lifting. Otherwise, I roll the round to the splitter, sit on another round and split away - to me, the easiest part of the job.

I did notice this weekend that the load of hickory seemed to be much heavier than even the red and white oak loads, it least from the standpoint of loading it on the truck.

Welcome Danny. This group of slightly "off" … OK… completely "nuts" folks, seem to be infected with some sort of illness that has no cure. The only relief is getting dirty, sweaty and thirsty while standing in the woods with bugs all over you or in snow up to your neck… as often as possible. This forum just makes it more fun…

    Welcome to the forum Danny.

Sounds like you have a great wife and a nice present. Now if only I had some time to teach you how to properly use that splitter.... One of these days I'll get around to making a video of splitting. It is tough because the videos, even a 30 second video takes a lot of space. Then to upload it to youtube, well, it allows for a nap while uploading.

Welcome, Danny - the soreness is a "good" sore though, isn't it? You found a great forum here. Pain is only weakness leaving the body, LOL

Man, I am surprised no one has asked you about the zombies in your area. I've been watching this documentary about a group of people around Atlanta, looks pretty rough down there. Glad you guys are doing alright.
