Ive used pine for kindling plenty of times, but only from board form. I scrounged a few Eastern white pine rounds last Fall and made them into splits recently. Spied them behind my shed today. I was undecided to use them for firepit wood or kindling so i opted for the latter. More than enough scrap for the pit. Split some up and made into bundles for easy storage. Smelled great! I get plenty of scrap boards from work so dont really need to scrounge softwood rounds, but if i ever do i will.
Pine has to be the number one thing I find when I’m cruising the backroads. So many times people take a pine tree down in their yard and just dump the pieces in a ditch somewhere. I must’ve grabbed a couple dozen pieces of white pine back in December, already cut to 16” lengths. Talk about a kid in a candy store. I made a mountain of kindling out of a lot of it and the rest I’ve been enjoying in the outdoor pit. Speaking of pine, my buddy in Prospect just took down a dozen in his yard and he’s looking to get rid of them.
The rounds i took were practically across the street from our driveway. Part of the Asplundh cutting here last Fall. Lots of it wouldve been nice if milled. Had to be 3-4 cords worth. Heres a link This Pine Could be Mine?
That tree looked like it could’ve fetched a few bucks at a sawmill! Almost a shame to butcher something like that up
Pine makes some great fire starter. And like has been said before, there are some localities where you burn pine or snowballs.
All I burn in the firepit is pine, it burns hot and fast but when dry makes a nice fire. I will say once you get up into the knots, it can be tough to split.
Looks store bought, Brad! Slap a 5$ price tag on it, bring it in with the groceries, and troll Ms. Buzzsaw!
Hmmmm , someone might be on to something. Sounds like a great idea. Maybe get some out to a few stores or gas stations near some of the local campgrounds.
Ive tried retailing bundles with little success. I have enough trouble keeping seasoned hardwood for the stations i wholesale bundles to. Ive thought of trying kindling. Every time her and i go to the store i almost always stop to check out whatever the store is selling for wood in front.
It's all about being a kindling ninja. You gotta do the hatchet! (A little self promotion but I'm not monetizing anything I just post for fun)
Mother Nature usually takes down some Basswood each year so we use that for kindling but this year since we have a ton of pine, I split up enough to fill out a face cord stack. I'll be splitting up more for use in the outside fireplace this winter once the temps cool off and the painting on the front porch is started/finished.
