I tore down a barn several years back that was build on the mountain around 1868. The beams and posts were hand-hewn pine, very dense and heavy. I used a large piece of it for my mantel and saved the scraps, split them up into small slivers and still use them for firestarters to this day. That sapwood is like gasoline!
