OK Fellow Hoarders, Many/most of you know how I get most of my wood, for those who don't, sit back, relax and you'll get it. Hey Brad buZZsaw BRAD, what you think of this load? I'm getting that "Firewood parking sign"! Ok, yes I got some work to do... I owe the guys another case of beer. I was out when they dropped it off. Watchya think of this stuff?
Nice. I'm not 100% on the ID but I'm leaning towards Siberian elm, with a little dead maple (maybe) mixed in...
I see one "typical" hackberry round in the first pic. Haven't cut any myself but that's my guess. Here's the suspect:
Yeah, there IS some mixed in but the bigger stuff is the prize... I gotta take what I can get. It's free, mostly...
The big ones got me stumped. I can see where others think it's Siberian elm but I don't see the quintessential green lichen normally found on their bark. Not sure I've seen a Siberian elm without it.
He'll be along, but I'm 99.9% I'm correct on this one. It's a prominent tree around here, see them alot...
Good score if that's the case. The color just looks a little different from what I'm used to seeing. Could be a regional thing.
And, I could be wrong. Lets see what the rest of the gang say's. But I'm fairly certain on this one. I was really tricked on the last cutting though, turning out the tree in my neighbors yard was Mulberry not hackberry.
Split it stack it wait a few years it will throw heat .. I see white stuff BUT I got snow banks 8’ tall my driveway been white since thanksgiving I am not splitting til it warms up to 30° minimum
I see a bit of Siberian elm in there. It splits easily. There seems to be a few species in that pile. Nice score!
SWEET!!! Thinking you get a certain award for today! Kinda stumped on the species though. The round in the first pic closest to camera on right looks like TOH. Jealous on all the grass you have showing. 8-10" of wet snow here yet. With the extended forecast showing above freezing temps for the daytime I fear we're coming into mud season here! EDIT: After reviewing Jeffrey's zoomed pic, the TOH appears to be beech.
Not BL. I can spot that stuff blindfolded. After reading the other replies I'm thinking some type of elm myself. Im not good at the nuances of the different species though. I do see the hackberry from the zoomed pic. EDIT: IM WRONG!!! I just went back and zoomed in on Dave's pics. There is some BL in the mix. The darker heartwood threw me off. I've only scrounged it once with the heartwood that dark.
There is a lady down the road a block that has a Siberian elm in her yard, big old tree, I walked down to look at the bark of her tree, it's (similar) but not the same.
