    Hey gang,

Is there a muffler mod I can do for my 250? It's running fine but can I get a bit more out of it?

    I'd like your input please,
    Thanks,

    Dave.

No that was not the right thread but there is one here the poster fitted the front cover pretty good and drilled the internal baffle.

I looked at my MS230 (same muff) and the deflector cover, and the internal baffle are two potential areas of improvement along with the actual exit hole in the front of the muffler. On a 250, you could do well drilling another exit hole to match the first, and opening up or fabbing a new deflector for it.

MM a MS 250 really helps them; split the muffler and take out the baffle

    The baffle

Were the baffle hit the outer cover cut and opening the same size of the incoming exhaust

    Close it back up

On the outer cover plate drill a 5/8's hole

Readjust your carb and go cut some wood :)

That's gonna make a faster and louder MS250 for sure! There are varying degrees of muffler modification, some are reluctant to let 'em roar so I'm always looking for ways to improve power with a minimal noise penalty.

But then there are those that just gotta have it fast & loud, happy to oblige either way!

I'm thinking I'm going to have to do that. We decided on the the 250 so that the the wifey could handle the saw. I've been after an upgrade since the first run.

Just about every MM I do is 100 to 120 % of the intake opening; I've played so much with the MM on MS 250 and making changes on the MS 250 it's scary; some of the other changes I've done to them is porting; timing and different carb

Clamshell (open port) porting is not discussed a whole lot compared to conventional closed port jugs. Have you tried boosting compression on that motor? Popup?

I always thought the MS250 was a dirty runnin' snotty little bastard out of the box. I might have to see if my BIL will let me play with his. :D

Is that a good thing or a bad thing?

I haven't welded anything on the top of a piston on a MS 250

Just doing some simple mod's on the ports has showing gains on that saw :)

As soon as I get the other three saws off my bench this MS 250 motor will be worked up more than the two MS 250 pictured above

I just like playing with the motors :)

A very good thing. When they were selling for $299, they were a fantastic deal for a homeowner or a light firewood cutter. Reliable as gravity and power to spare, even with the 18" bar and good chain on it.

    I run 18" .325 b/c on both of my MS 250 :)

MM, I got lucky, I bought mine early last year and I got it for $299. Now I think they are $349 here. I have the 18" on mine, I also got the extra 1 year warranty for buying a sixpack of the oil. I didn't want to tear into it for fear of screwing it up. I wanted to see if it had been done with the muffler mod before I pursue and proceed……. I do want to create a frankenstine:eek: this coming year, If you remember vaguely I have that toasted 390 I want to hot rod, and it's no holds barred on that one;)

Blown up 023/025/MS230/250's are not hard to find. Maybe pick one up as a parts machine, mod that muffler, try it out on your saw and if you have trouble, you still have your factory muffler, untouched.

Really, the worst thing you could do short-term is make the saw too loud. Other than that, opening the muff a bit will just be a win-win for you and the saw, providing you get the carb re-adjusted properly.

If your worried about MM'ing your muffler pick up a extra on freebay

I have a extra muffler for all my saws

That motor I posted a pic of above came out of a saw that was dropped and the handle broke

Also check for straight gas saws seems there are many out there just floating around

Also check with your local saw shop; one that I go to always has saws that don't get pickup and they have sales the start of each year to clear space in the saw shop

Yea mufflers are pretty cheap on the bay. U can even get new and used or off parted saws.
