So I finally got around to it!!

I got this almost new weed eater a bit over a year ago. It was a gutless 25cc Bolens by MTD big box special. One of those curved shared jobs that you get for like $90.

It was pretty weak. Good for a city lot owner that weed eats every 1-2 weeks. But for us in the country that only get to it like 3-6 weeks or so or have ditched etc its under powered.

I would take it to the farm 3-4x a summer as it was light and cheap and I dont have to drag my echo there. But if I was going to do the ditch I would use the echo but usually took this one as it was light.

I got the idea to muffler modd it but it had D shape screws. So iI ordered a special screwdriver bit never got to it this summer.

So I took the time to do it.

I did not realize the plastic cover was also the back of the crank case!!!!

So made some slots in the cover to remove the screws. I widened the port and ground out the screen and drilled out the baffle on the top and added a second 3/8 port on the back side.

WOW is all I can say. Cuts like my larger straight shift echo thats 32cc I think and feels like it has more torque . Its just a bit louder as well. But this thing has some @$$ behind it now. Can pull the .095 line through tall shin deep vegetation like nothing now!! Before it would bogg out.

Took about half a turn richer or more on H and just a hair on the L and then required the idle to be turned down. IMG_20140323_164917_082.jpg IMG_20140323_164906_493.jpg IMG_20140323_162247_195.jpg IMG_20140323_162236_770.jpg IMG_20140323_163411_715.jpg

Maybe it's just my point of view being a bit skewed. On those particular units, it's not worth the labor charge to replace a broken starter rope. Let alone modify it for more performance. But I like what you did, nothing wrong with getting more performance from something you already have. Even if is an el cheapo. :)

Oh Yea I see that point. Same way I now have a free, but broken pressure washer. I was going to fix it for a could worker. But I told them after I even bought a cheap ebay pump for it and charged them a few hours labor it would not be worth it. It was a no name chinese unit.

But Yea throw a $5 door in a $90 unit and charge them $35 or something for labor and your close to half the value on a used unit.

But Yea I have $0 in this thing even modded. Tookme about 45 mins to do it...maybe an hour with the tune and test run. The five mins I run the thing I can already tell its going to use quite a bit more fuel, but it sipped it before.

I have used this thing several times since this modd.

This is now my go to trimmer over the Echo straight shaft. This thing now has power and tons of torque for its size and is light.

It drinks the fuel compared to what it use to though.

I would modd my Echo but it has an u adjustable carb...I needs to find a comparable adjustable carb for it and the perform surgery on it!

Do it you will be amazed at the power increase!! I'm not kidding I bet there is close to 30-50% increase in power.

You can now put the head in shin deep grassand it just ggrunts and keeps going instead of stopping the head and just going gggaahhhhhhh. It with cut thick stuff it would of never though of before.

I got a free weed eater brand cheapo from a guy at work this week he said would not run. Looks new...all I did was bump the idle up and adjust the carb a bit. But it only had one adjustment and I think it was an L cause it was on the motor side of carb but it would affect it at WOT. Anyway I adjusted it till clean and max rpm. But the head on it is junk...just one piece of .080 line coming out and it has way less power than the mtd did originally. I'm just going to sell it as it instead of putting a new head on it any trying to modd it.
