Bought one last June to have a small saw for limbing. My 193 top handle does good but wanted a little bit more at times but something light. Anyhow, used this thing maybe 3 times and couldn’t keep it running for crap. Took it in, they said bad gas ( same I used in all the others ) and it was good to go. Put it in the shop and went to use it the other day , same problem. Now they are saying low compression?!? I guess my question is , anyone have luck going through Stihl direct for issues? I got the extra warranty when I purchased by buying their fuel or oil or something. I have called twice and left voicemails but nothing. Anyone got a trick or tip ? Should I find another dealer ? These guys are close but rather not trash a brand new saw.

Find a new dealer. Your warranty is only as good as your dealer and it sounds like the one close to you isn’t interested in taking care of you.

I'm sorry! I'd contact Stihl on angles, phone like you've done, and email, I wonder if there is a Stihl chatboard? Glad you got the extra warranty and not happy you need it!

I will look into that too. Didn’t think of that. Will see if the extra warranty means a hill of beans. Lifelong fan of their saws but not much else. Weedeaters are for crap in my opinion. Had a couple and not much better than the craftsman ir box store stuff. Bought a Redmax 5 years ago and still starts like a dream and strong. Bought a new one this year and a leaf blower , they make a good product and are little known here anyway

At least the 180 carb I was able to clean and get working instead of having to replace it.

makes one a believer in a Holzforma/ farmertec brand saw.. they’re all from China.

I bought a 170 new on sale a few years back. Worked well until that Summer when it wouldnt hot start. Id leave it idling and muffler got clogged with carbon. Dealer cleaned for free even though it wasnt covered under warranty. I had enough and sold it to Eric Wanderweg. The only Stihl saw ive owned that i didnt like. It was replaced with a 201 rear handle.

Be persistent with Stihl. A new saw shouldnt give you issues. Consider upgrading to a 192/193/194 rear handle. Roughly same weight as a 170.

I own a couple top handles as well so know what you are saying about the rear handle.

Guess I didn’t realize the 19o series had read handle ?! I will definitely look in to it.
Disappointed in this saw to say the least. Hopefully they will make it right , all my others are and ale have been bulletproof

My MS170 has been temperamental for sure. It was running decent in the cooler weather, but now it’s acting up. It’s fine if I’m on the throttle hard taking heavy cuts, but if I’m using it sporadically taking it easy it starts to bog down and almost fouls the spark plug. Gotta keep goosing the throttle to clean it out. I use it infrequently so I’d rather not try to tune it for the hot weather, then tune it again in the winter.

If it's under warranty, hound your dealer. If you don't use it frequently, used canned E-free fuel.

Same , e free on all small engines at my place for sure. Mower, saws ,atv , anything.

Got a hold of Stihl. They called dealer and I am taking it back to them tomorrow and they will diagnose and decide to repair or replace. To be continued!

do they start like other saws or like the 192/93t? So use to choke until it tries, half choke and pull once or twice the to run. The top handles I own have a different process to start and isn’t as easy in my opinion.

Had to check. The 192 RH was bought cheap as it was seized??? and hasnt been fixed.
My 194 & 201 top handles. The 194 has a primer bulb. 201 has mtronic carb and no primer. I wasnt planning on getting the 201 but it came up for sale, ironically a week after i got the 201 rear handle, for a song and a dance and i couldnt say no. IMG_3420.JPG
