I had 5 lo pro chains to test on my 261C-M. With yesterday off, it seemed like a pretty good time to do it :)

All were brand new chains. Except PS and PS3 are not offered as square from Stihl.

    Stihl PS square filed
    Stihl PS3 square filed
    Stihl PS round
    Stihl PS3 round
Oregon Lo Pro (forget the name)

Some pics of the saw.. :D

Also, I got a new addition to my cutting arsenal. A member (unnamed, unless they want to come forward) sent me a Sawbuck (all hardware and glue included) as a Christmas present. This wasn't my Secret Santa, just a regular member. Forever thankful.. It needed stained and assembled, but this gift is my favorite already this year! ! :dex: Thank you!! You know who you are!!

    Love this!!

Each set was timed twice.. So I took all 6 times and got an average. It's easier to post one number, than the multiple I normally do. Some cuts were considerably quicker. After running through and looking at technique and also knots? I can see why.

Average times are above the link.

    Avg time: 5.59 sec
    261 with PS square filed:

    Avg time: 6.64 sec
    261 with PS3 square filed:

    Avg time: 5.28 sec
    261 with round PS:

    Avg time: 5.17 sec
    261 with round PS3:

    Avg time 6.91 sec
261 with Oregon Low Pro (round):

Go to Madsens site and look at their square chain tutorial.
Compare the angles on your chain with those angles in the tutorial to get an idea where you are at?

square shoulda been faster, in either PS or PS3.. wondering if the rakers were a tad low? looked about like equal pressure on the saw between cuts.

its amazing to me that the oregon 91 was 6.91 average and the stihl PS/PS3 was 5.17/5.28. that's a huge difference in off the real chain and a 50cc saw. got any RM you can try? lol. The .11 seconds could have been pushing a tad harder on one than the other, still almost identical. I just put a PS loop on the little T540xp from Brain the other day and it felt like the saw doubled HP... maybe I'll have to compare it to the oregon and a sq ps3 I have coming....

I said this years ago that 3/8 RS "safety" chain was the same cutting speed as regular RS and people laughed. Not sure which version I tested if it was RSC or RS but same chain with safety humps on one and not on the other. if you aren't bore cutting the safety yellow isn't bad chain at all. I'm just glad there is finally good chain for the 3/8LP crowd.

RS3 is the green safety version with the humps on the driver links? The old safety chain with the angel wings was type #2

Look at the PS chain cutters closely and compare them with anything 3/8 LP from Oregon?

    :(
Those are my square filed chains ........
Rakers werent touched, seemed too grabby on my ported 33cc saw - but that ported 261 could stand more and needs the rakers lowered.

Dex, I would like to see those rakers dropped - without any cutter work. Feel like doing a little measuring and flat filing - or sending them to me and I will set them for that saw ? Seemed the saw held more RPM on both square filed chains than it did on the new off the roll chains, that PS and PS3 is super sharp off the roll.

Wow, a lot of unexpected results there, eh? Is that the loop of 91VX I gave you?

The angles in my avatar is what I file into every tooth
I know my square filed chain pretty well...... you get a knack for listening to small, almost imperceptible sounds between the different cuts you do when testing out the chains in all different cuts, and whats heard in a video. Getting my chain angles set was one thing (you can go 1 tank in hardwood, then they need sharpening) - but having no 50cc ported saw to run them on (not just anyone ported it either - it runs on banana juice) ............ I couldn't test them.

Them rakers need to come down

That chain in your avatar is not going to cut worth a toot after a short while? From looking at the picture, you have your inside corner low and there would be a beak that would quickly break off. At that point, the cutting game is lost.

I find it interesting that the PS3 turned in the fastest cut time...
This tells me there's something amiss here...
Though, the PS and PS3 chains do cut very well right off the roll...
Stihl got them right for sure...
The PS should be very slightly faster... But I've seen stranger things..

I got new PS and PS3 right here but no clean wood to test in anymore. Do have a friend that does cants not far down the road. That way it throws out all the variables in testing. Heck even in cants times can change in a foot or so.
Maybe someday. Just not into such stuff much anymore.

No, I said that saw is strong enough to have the rakers lowered
