This free to me saw gave the prior owner some issues with starting and staying going. It went to a non-Stihl dealer last fall for a new carb and chain. P.O. gave it away as she was having trouble starting it and keeping it going.

When I picked it up, I dumped out the old gas and put in fresh mix. I' ve also added Startron to the mix, thinking it is a carb issue.

The chain was really tight, so I ended up adjusting it.

It started well but felt balky running it and it would slow down in the cut. There is only one screw adjustment on the carb for idle. No matter how low I set the idle, the chain always turns on the bar.

Today I ended up taking the clutch drum off. When I took the clip out and removed the washer, I could see little rods down between the shaft and wall of the clutch drum. So it looks like the roller bearing is gone.

Is the bright ring in the center of the drum part of the bearing or the drum?

The teeth on the sprocket look good. Hopefully the drum is not worn out from the bad bearing.

I should be able to get to my dealer by Monday and get a new bearing and let him check the drum out and see if there is slop with the new bearing.

The bright ring is the outer race of the bearing. I maybe wrong but it wouldn't surprise me at all if the dealer sells you the whole clutch unit.
There are ways to remove the bearing and you maybe be able to get one from a bearing house. If it has #s on it. I would gently heat it around the ridge and try and beat it out using a punch catching the edge of the bearing. Another way maybe to weld a few places around the inside of the bearing. You will be risking warping the clutch if to much heat or burning through the race, I couldn't do this with my buzzbox but if you had access to a TIG machine it could be done. I will bow to the more mechanically inclined.

I just went on YouTube on a MS 250 clutch removal video and the bright ring is part of the clutch drum. The roller bearing fits inside it.

The bright ring is part of the clutch drum . The bearing is separate from that . I believe the P/n is
9512 933 1022 . It is used in the 170,180,210,and 250 . So it should be readily available ,and inexpensive .

Here is the repair manual for that saw. Page 36 or 37 has carb adjustment details

Yep the bright ring like others have said is part of the brake drum. This is no big deal someone just never greased the bearing in there. You know those clutch drums get really hot and I use bearing grease for disc brakes because it is high temp grease. Lucky you because you got a saw for free and all you have to do is to use your know how to get it going again. Congrats.

So all i can figure is that with the worn bearing, the drum must have been rubbing against the clutch causing the chain to constantly spin...

I'll be happy to get this squared away.

farmer steve , I could get the pdf to load but I found the manual online. Thank you though.

I was surprised the bearing was plastic with metal rollers. Greased it up good.
