So I used to think black locust was the best thing going...until I started burning hickory this year. I’ve experienced longer burn times, more heat, and more coals. All of this in my fireplace. I will continue to sell any black locust I get as premium but I will now make sure any hickory I get (which is very minimal) will be kept for my personal use. When considering all factors, splitting ease, rot resistant I still prefer black locust but based on just burning, move over locust.
I've only burned a few smaller random pieces so far but I've heard a few people on here mention this as well. I do have a small pile that I can burn next year. The only downside to Hickory (so I've been told) is that it attracts bugs that like to chew it up.
Hickory is the cats meow. Only hedge would be better but have never had any. I never sell it. I guess the only downside is the 3 year wait to burn it if cut green and it must be kept off the ground.
This is why we said it was a crying shame that SBH didn’t make the finals in the firewood battle series. It’s always been one of my personal favorites. I’m burning Red Oak right now, but I dream of Hickory. Both incredible firewood’s.
Good stuff hickory. One of my BL customers wants some hickory next year. My friend gets most of my hickory too. Uncommon scrounge for me. What do you average for hickory drop offs Joe?
Hickory is my go to firewood when it’s single digit cold. Or when I want to keep the stove nice and warm all night. Properly seasoned hickory can’t be beat IMO.
Never burned any hickory, but have some BL and red oak in the fire place tonight and the BL pops quite a bit
My wife prefers hickory in the woodstove. I had 2 cords of it going into winter. I will be out by the end and haven't scored anymore this year. These last 2 weeks have been colder and the house is burning wood I have 2 cords of oak already seasoning for next winter. I plan on cutting down a standing dead oak this spring. If all goes well I should have 3+ cords of oak cut for next winter by April. Have about 2/3 cord of black locust and 1/6 cord hedge seasoning too. I feel good about next year....just don't want to start burning next year's wood this year.
