We have had wet weather here the last few days. I decided to cover the piles of wood I had been splitting with tarps. The weather cleaned this afternoon so I went out and uncover the woodpiles On the pile of poplar was a mouse nest. It does not take them long to find your wood and build a nest. Last year I had one to chew a rather large hole in a tarp covering one of the stacks. Since I am surrounded by woods they are worst than if I was out in the open in a subdivision filled with manicured lawns. I like watching the hawks fly over hoping they will spot a mouse; or vole, and take it out.

I'd rather them in the woodpiles. This time of year I'm starting to hear them scratching around in the walls of the house. Time for some D-con.

Yes we have that problem too.

Myself I am not a huge fan of raptors. I live on a hill so they are here, but my ducks and chickens will look in fear as their shadow sweeps across the ground. I would send them down the .410 highway, but several are young eagles and are tagged by the Game Wardens and they would frown on that. They watch them pretty close. I had a dead sheep last year that I put out for coyote bait, and the eagles got into the carcass. Within a day I could see snowshoe tracks from the Game Wardens wondering why the Eagles were staying in one area in the dead of winter. I was not in trouble, doing that is not against the law, but they keep an eye out for their eagles that is for sure.
