Silver Maple that is. Same location as my A Thorn in my Side score. Got a text yesterday saying they started taking them down. Postponed from the 15th. Stopped by early this afternoon to check it out and after coming home I checked the radar and rain moving out. Grabbed the saws and went back. I wasnt letting the Goldilocks wood get away this time plus I need the inventory. No time tomorrow to cut. Picked out the straight logs. Not too many from the huge tree. Small barkless dead elm to boot. 241 cutting solo. 400 for back up. The rest coming down tomorrow. I wont be able to get back there til Monday maybe. Nice straight trees. I'd like to get another two loads if possible.
Pretty common around here as a yard planting and the only "wild" grown ones I see are urban trees that sprout and grow unchecked in abandoned lots and property lines. Dont score it that often and wish I did as its an ideal bundle wood...fast drying. Ill mix with higher BTU woods.
What I like about your scores is it looks like there is nothing straight in that tree and yet you leave with a truck load of perfect rounds. There is a lot of skill there.
I cherry picked (no pun intended) for the straight pieces, measure and cut accordingly. I left the chunks/shorts/crooked wood behind. That monster tree grew in the open so it didn't have a lot of straight limb wood. The other group of trees are nice and straight and will yield some nice rounds if I'm able to cut any more. Seems as though it sprouted on its own and went straight up. The first third of the load was cut from them.
I am familiar with the Comstock lode...big silver find from the 19th century so the word stuck with me. Thought it an apropos for the title!

Tree guy text yesterday. Rest of tree down. Had a good talk with him as first time I met him in person. He was running a 661 with a 36" bar. The full comp chain was sooooooo dull I can't believe he let it get like that. I politely offered some pointers as I think he is in high school or fresh out. Might get a chance later to cut another load. If not tomorrow.
They were REALLY dull. It was a full comp chain and he hand sharpened too. I forget Joe, whats the longest bar you run?
He had bucked a lot of it already. Of course to the wrong length and crooked cuts. The few logs that weren't were big but manageable. Maybe another PU full. Going tomorrow.
If I could have only one wood for bundles, it would be silver maple. Splits easy, dries fast and burns well (for camp fires, not so much for heat). Good score!
28 is capable of doing anything I’ve needed done so far. I’m perfectly fine with leaving it that way too Right around 36” is the biggest trunk I ever bucked,,,,,at least that I remember measuring. When I started the second pile of black locust the first trunk was a pretty big one. So I brought the 462 with a nice new chain for it. Carried it over to the splitter, the end was a broken butt. Decided to trim the butt off right away. Hit something about one inch deep, felt like stone. Backed off but made A split second decision, screw it see if I can cut through. Chain is pretty much trash anyway. Nothing, no cut. I havent sharpened that chain yet but proved to myself even horsepower won’t fix everything LOL
