I never memorize any of it to the number I just know what type is better than the other over all. Usually my memory doesn't fail me...usually.

i have a notion in my head that sweeps numbers contradicts some of the other charts that appear to be in line with eachother

I see this a lot when I compare sweeps to others.

I, like a few others mentioned, just memorize or look to see what species is higher than the others, I don't really look at the actual numbers. I usually use sweeps.

    The other on posted:
    firewoodresource.com/firewood-btu-ratings/

Lists white oak very low - and identical to red oak. I was always under the impression this wasn't the case and that white oak burned much hotter than red oak - on par with hickory almost.

actually that is the only BTU chart I've seen that doesn't list white oak drastically higher than red oak. I agree that most are pretty in line but I have found sweeps to be pretty consistent, its that other one, firewoodresource that seems to have the discrepancies...

Here is another one that lists white oak higher.

For me I take about 3 or 4 and use them all some what, some seem to be right for some woods but not all, that is for the woods I tend to know.
