I took this one down on Saturday - the one on the right. Another one of the red pines that my grandfather planted when he was a teenager. I don't have any good pics from Saturday though because my phone was dead. I loaded up most of the top yesterday on the same trip, including 2 of 5 8.5' saw logs. Basically the whole reason I wanted to get this now was to use the crooked log from the top for decking boards to go with the black locust 4x4s I made last week. This one ended up being a lot lower quality compared to the last one - the blue decay extends further into the trunk near the base. The best log was the one I got yesterday from 24-32' up the tree. That yielded a really nice boxed heart 7x8". (On the left) I had to mill the last 3 logs in place out in the field because they were too heavy to move. I got enough slab off of 2 of them to get em loaded up this afternoon. Then I finished milling the second log up at the house. I couldn't saw it square with the heart because it was just too crooked. There ended up being a good amount of decay still so I took another 1.5" slab from each edge to use as decking for my pallet. So I ended up with a 6x8" and 2 more decking boards out of that one. Oh yeah, ended up with some firewood too!
Hard at it ain't ya Shawn Curry?! Planning to open a furniture factory with all you've gotten sawn down?
This is all just practice for that walnut... There's a really big piece of maple out back that's going to require my new 4' bar and mill. I think I'll get a little practice in with that next...
