Fairly nice day, so I went to the woods. Cut 2 small Oak leaners......one was dead, and the other not. What a difference in weight between the 2. The dead one was already loaded, and was quite a haul to the Jeep....2 rounds at a time. Guess I forgot to take pics of the dead trunk, so here's the live leaner after bucking. 28 rounds from this and the base was maybe 9-10", so not very big. Total from this load was just a hair over 23 cu. ft.
Couple more pics...one loaded, and one unloaded waiting for the splitter. Threw the saw on the pile as a size comparison.
Nice load... This is exactly what I do. The hauling out is extra work, but I'm not leaving that perfect wood back in the woods to rot. Nice looking oak you have there! Perfect size too....
Response to Boog: I have one. 5'x10'. I really need to streamline the process while in those woods. I'd need to trailer the tractor over there with my smaller trailer and use those to get in the woods, then bring those smaller loads to the larger trailer. Thing is, after the 2 hours I was there, my back was screaming at me to stop.....so I did.
After you stopped what do you take for it? I really am getting in tune with "when it's time to stop". Sounds like you are too. Go slow my friend.
The saw is my badly in need of a cleaning 455 Rancher. Yeah, that Oak is already very dry and light, and sadly a little punky. Stinny, I forgot I had some Ibu in the glovebox, but I took some when I got home. Pretty much everything else messes with me too much. My usual "time to stop" is right after I get going.
That's why I'm into the smaller saw principle, I don't carry around anything "much bigger" than is necessary to get the work done. I recognize that I'm retired and can just "leisurely" cut out back, while most of you guys are younger, scrounging, and still burning your candles at both ends. Cutting "time" is important to you (or you simply want the sheer fun of it all). Take care of your backs my friends!
Actually, I spend too much time stopping. I've got this figured out. If I do another 28 trips like today, I'll have a years worth of wood. WooHoo. 6 trips/cord.
You keep working at it , it will add up pretty quick. You'll get it refined to work out for your situation & equipment & get more efficient. Takes me 6 - 7 hours to get a cord of rounds in the trailer at the cutting area. Got it refined about as efficient as I can do, for the equipment & body I have to work with. I take 4 Ibuprofen (800 mg, per the doc & take with food) with breakfast on cutting days. Helps a lot. + Drink lots of water. All in all it seems like you are enjoying it Definitely getting lots of exercise ! Great pictures, keep them coming !
Thanks Dave. Had to push myself toward the end to get all the rounds I cut, but I knew what I had would just about fill the Jeep and didn't want to leave any. Maybe I should start taking the Ibu before I start, eh? Took 3 when I got home after eating a sammich. Took about 2 hours for today's load....1/6th cord. Lotsa walking to get the rounds back to the Jeep. If I could get closer to the wood I cut, things would go much quicker.
Yea I have n ATV to skid the logs to the trailer. Logs sometimes are a litter dirty, but about the best way to get the trees out of the woods. Not much level or solid ground out three. Bet if your tractor was over there, it would be a bit easier & faster. But getting that stuff there is another issue. Like hauling my ATV to & from every trip.
Stacking inside the jeep looks like lots of lifting and stretching. However I understand making do with what you got. As for the IBU, lots of water. Those things are tough on the kidneys. And yes taking before hand is better than after.
Drinking lots of water is key. Ibu is flushed out. Taking with food protects the stomach. Ibu keeps me going at it… and wanting to.
Yep. I carry a mug of water wherever I go.....all day, every day. ETA: I drink the water, too. Dave, the thought was to take the larger trailer loaded with the tractor and small trailer over there. Cut, load, then load all that back into the big trailer. To make it worth while, I'd need to leave the tractor there until all wood was done, then make a trip back for it. It takes up close to 1/2 the trailer space. She has no place for me to store it (the garage is crammed full). Trying to talk my brother into bringing his Can-Am over to get in the woods.
