Mold? Disease? Where do you draw the line on what you'll bring in your home?

Some of my wood has mold and other crap on it.

Do you guys still bring logs like that in your home and burn it? Any concerns? What wouldn't you bring in?

As long as you cant shred the wood with your fingers and its dry, I burn it.

I have no problem handling, I guess I'm just concerned about health issues w/ my kids particularly with mold. Is this something to be concerned about?

I usually only keep a day's worth of wood in the house at a time.

Maybe something like this would be best to go straight from the stack to the stove.

Would be a pain to scrape off each piece, but that may be an option? A mask of good filtration level may be in order as well...
Definitely something I wouldn't let sit around in a warm environment.....

    Which raises this question-
How do you cover your stacks? Top cover only, full tarp envelope, uncovered, shaded area?

I guess not an issue if you put it in on an already hot fire. I think if its only a few peices its ok, but i wouldnt want that happening with entire wood supply.

This isn't going to be popular, but I don't cover my stacks until right about this time. At this point its top covered only

Same thing here Bill, but at this point, the top cover is the shed. The wood has been in there for a couple months or so after sitting outside for a couple years.
Almost every piece of wood has something on it. Spider webs, spiders, mouse poo, mouse nest, grass clippings from mowing that gets stuck in the spider webs, mold, fungi amongi, moss, leaves, bird feathers (I know, weird, right?).
If you're concerned, send it to me, or wear gloves and only throw those in the stove straight from the stack. Done.

That's entirely natural and quite common. Here's the way we need to look at fungus and mold....IT'S EVERYWHERE. As long as your home environment is dry, it won't cause problems. Spores from every mold on earth are probably in our homes as we speak.

Now I won't bring insect-infested wood into the house, that's where I draw the line. That stuff doesn't even come home with me. It goes to the compost site.

I'll throw the wood with ants aside. When I go back later, they gone.
Scotty's right, you really don't wanna' know what's in your house.............
An example....I can start a sourdough starter just from the yeasts flyin' around in the air.

One thing we all need to remember, especially if entertaining guests during the holidays, is that mold can aggravate/trigger Asthma, and bringing in a load of molded up wood prior to a big get together could set the stage for an unfortunate turn of events come supper time...
    Something to keep in mind.
