Maybe this is has been done before but I thought I would post a modification that I did to my US non-EPA stove. The only air control that came with the stove is the damper on the stove pipe. There is a series of permanently open slots on the front of the stove about the door. They are about 1/2"x2" in size. To regulate the air intake I took a long magnet (it was used to pick up nails on a construction site) and broke it into sections that cover up the holes. When I want some immediate heat I open the damper and take off a few of magnets. For longer burns I generally I open up just one of the slots. Here is the right side slots closed. Here are three slots open. Even though its not the prettiest of modifications, because the slots are just under the lip of the stove top, the magnets blend it so it doesn't look too bad.
Beautiful. Is this a recent mod, or are you just now telling us about an old mod? I hope it's working well.
Thanks! I used it last winter. Seems to work pretty well. I get better burns and have very little smoke out the chimney.
That stove amazes me (not in a good way), did not believe that they made a stove like that until a couple of years ago. Give it enough air and you dont have to pass the EPA regulations, a hot fire is a clean fire.
Grizzly, it's a model number 2007B. Spark, when I bought it I didn't know better. I picked it up at Bomgaars at the end of year sale for around $300. In fact you can still go and buy one like it today that doesn't meet EPA regulations. I think since Iowa is blessed with such (relatively) cheap natural gas that there aren't as many wood burners here. Combine that with open plains to let the wind blow the smoke around make the need to adopt EPA regulations, right or wrong, a low priority. I admit had it not been so cheap for me to get into wood burning I may not have made the jump. Once I learned more about burning wood efficiently (thanks to guys on this site) I started to wonder if I couldn't modify it to increase the performance and decrease the smoke it generated. Not too scientific but I accomplished it for the most part. I love going out and looking at the chimney and only seeing heat waves for the most part.
That is the King model that we burned for less than a full season before throwing our hands up in the air and getting a Drolet! Oh, and I saw that Menards added this model to their own line up this season.
I knew there was some one that had that stove and talked about it, forgot it was you Adam. Schlot- I think its great you have it working better but those stoves (as sold) are an accident waiting to happen. They should have a warning label on them.
