Looks like a great idea, I just wonder how well it works when the ground is muddy or ice covered etc. I do have to say, it is a good concept though
So....I'm actually planning to build one of these after seeing it on another forum a couple of years ago. A neighboring town was scrapping a construction trailer and my brother-in-law saved the frame for me (cut into 3 parts for transport) which I plan to use as the frame and then another buddy who works at a scrap yard got me 80 of these big honkin' casters I plan to use on the racks themselves. I plan to have a winch on the front and pull the racks like a train instead of trying to push them. Now I just need to get the band mill my BIL plan to get this spring so I can start milling up the lumber for the shed and racks!
I like where you are going with this Start a new thread with your build progress and keep posting updates. So with a winch from the front end are you going to latch the racks together so they move together as a train?
My plan is to hook onto the furthest rack back and pull them all towards the front. I bought a bunch of pallet rack spreaders real cheap to use as the rack bases. One of my winter projects is to get them all cut up and welded but the lack of snow has kept me in the woods cutting and skidding; which isn't a bad thing, but it delays my project somewhat. I'll start a thread when I start getting serious about it. I figure I can get about 10 to 12 cord on racks and in line on my frame. I've got some clearing to do in my woodlot closest to where the back end of the shed will end. My hope is to do all my processing in the wood lot to help keep the yard areas a little more tidy.
I was thinking a bit after watching the first video, i bet it would work pretty good to use a set of come-alongs under the structure to pull the pallets... Just in case somebody doesn't have a fancy tracked skid steer handy.
That's a pretty slick setup! I thought I had it figured out, but XXL one upped me for sure! Nice! I haul mine right into the attached garage...
The forklift? That is just a Prime Mover L-812 concrete buggy with the optional forklift mast on it. Good for ~1000# or so. It was converted from a stander to a rider by a neighbor many years ago. It was never really utilized by my dad for his original purpose for it. It just sat in a machinery shed (minus the Honda engine that was installed on it at conversion time, then later "borrowed" for a log splitter project) sinking into the dirt floor for ~30 years until I got the bright idea to use if for my firewood. Dad said if I could get it going, I could have it. We fished it out of the back of the shed, going right over top of some other non running equipment using the neighbors Gradall lift. I threw another Honda engine on it that I had just laying around, put dual drive wheels on it, then built racks for the wood. It all works great, but I still have more manual handling than that guy with the rail system...very good idea there. If I ever build a new house, that lil idea would be incorporated into the plans somehow...
