I built these 3 sided pallet racks for easier access and I'll probably end up with 12-15 of them when I'm "finished". They're standard pallet size, 40x48" and the sides are 40" high so it looks to me like they hold right around 45 cubic feet heaped up, or a little more than a 1/3 of a cord. I could have gone higher but I don't think they'd hold together without being 4 sided and this is about what my skidsteer wants to pick up safely anyway, it could carry a good deal more but going downhill would be entertaining. Right now they're sitting in a pretty prime drying spot getting full sunlight for the entire day as well as a real decent wind most of the time. Now that the solar kiln idea has been vetted (thanks Uncle Augie) I'd like to try that on the next group I fill up. With these I figured before the weather turns too horrible I'll wheel them down in front of the walk-in basement "furnace room" addition. edit: try and ignore that hideous camper in the background...that's another project!

Nice set up there Sam! Those will be very handy! What a time and back saver.

I have to build some bins, a little smaller than that though. I think I may just build and use one box that will fit under my porch and sit on top of a platform with heavy casters under the platform. So I can set the box full of wood on top of it. Then roll the platform where I need to under the porch and unload it. Still thinking.

Nice size. My Kubota is an L35. Same horse, good size that still fits in under the 8' garage door.

Oh Sam! You don't really own a skid steer I see. Because we did not see any pictures. Did you guys see any pictures of a skid steer in Sam's thread yet?

Always thought these racks were a good idea. I don't have cool toys like you guys though so no mobile racks for me :(

I'd like to get my dad set up on a system like this. :binoculars: It's getting hard for him to bend over to pick up the splits:BrianK:, so he just leaves it piled on the ground:picard:, and scoops it up with the FEL.

I figure I'll probably be supplying all his firewood in the next year or 2. My 3 year plan is basically in place. I'm about 1/2 way thru c/s/s 'ing year 3, and I probably have enough in rounds next to the garage to replace what I'm burning this year.

With a setup like that, the only time he'd need to handle the splits, is to load them in the stove! Only problem I see with that is, the wood would only be warming him 1 time, instead of 2 (or more)!!:fire:

I let the wood dry in stacks, so yes, I'm handling it a lot also. I just move it from my wood area to the house in this and similar boxes. I cut my wood at 26" and it's close to a cord in that box. It's built from the shipping platform that my boiler came on. I thought that to be an appropriate use of it!

That weight makes a huge difference.:bug: But the chains are mandatory on a SS in the snow.

To be fair it was just kinda hiding in the background! I'm pretty good at picking up and/or ignoring the tone online nowadays. It comes with plenty of experience in mis-interpretation!

I almost needed chains on mine last year when the snow kept on closing my exit path out of the walk-in basement area in the back of the house. Luckily I was able to bucket my way out and then dig a new path. Do you ever have any issues with the chains slipping off?
