Got a good lead from buzz-saw last week. Crews cutting along a state highway not far from us. Checked it out then (rain and no time to cut) and grabbed some mulberry chunks. Some primo Goldilocks sugar maple next door. With work and the other score I couldn't get back right away. Passed there today en route and maple was gone. Lots of fresh stumps too but minimal wood to be had. Fast forward to today. Get a text this morning from a wood customer of mine who happens to be a cop in a neighboring town. He gets overtime doing traffic duty for tree crews and gives me a heads up when he is close by. Got rained out at work so checked it out this afternoon. Turns out same company (not Asplundh) doing the other work from last week with a few crews in the area. Talked with today's crew and wood getting picked up within a few days so if I want some I gotta jump on it right away. If I get rained out and its light enough I may go tomorrow as there was a good sized clump of red maples they took down. Not primo but I can pick and choose and an easy cut. You can barely see it on the right in front of the bucket truck. I watched them for a few minutes limbing that red oak. Passed another crew taking down a sycamore. Not for me. Stay tuned.
All this rain makes me want to jump Looks like you might have a 17 minute window where it’s not raining on Friday to get more. HUGE growth rings on that mulberry!
That song takes me to a very specific place in time involving a 300' high roller coaster. You gonna end up as a sub contractor for the tree co's?? 'Disposal' seems to always be an issue for them. Of course you would get some undesirable wood too.
Well I jumped today. Light rain ended later morning and March wind kicked up. Cut the biggest of the red maple for a heaping load. They were still taking down the red oak next door. Passed a couple other areas where they were cutting. Good Brad load. Split most of it. With the tree service taking logs within a few days of cutting I more than likely wont be back here. Not much in the way of safe parking too.
Yes, but not mine. I believe it belonged to the tree service guys working right next door while I was there. I carry a one liter bottle of mix with me when I cut. Seldom do I use over two tank fulls of mix at a cut. If you look carefully at the cop car rainy pic in the OP you can see them working.
I might oblige but the landing would break my hips. I ain't a Spring chicken anymore even though I may (try to) behave like one!
Preach it!! I’m fighting a tight lower back since that last oak haul. I shouldn’t have brought home full rounds. I wanted to go nuts splitting this weekend but it’s going to have to wait. Does red maple give you any good aroma? I don’t believe I’ve ever had any.
More aromatic than sugar IME. They dry fast. Ill sell this Jan-Feb next year. Rack right next to the pile emptying Saturday and it'll go there. I should've put my brace on lifting those, but didn't. Luckily I just get a tad sore the next day. I believe my back bone is cast iron. They were soaked and heavy.
I should've put my brace on lifting those What back braces do you use? I have one but it is rather large.
Should probably wear a brace like that. Although my back pain more commonly comes on from doing something ridiculously low impact... like fishing or getting up off the floor after playing with Legos with the kiddo. I don't usually get the stiff back from heavy lifting. I wonder why...
