To those interested: In 1908 there was a fire in northern Michigan that was a disaster beyond belief. If you are a Michigander or are interested in events past, take a few minutes to look this up. We have relatives in the small town of Metz that have passed on memories of the fire from past generations. The town is near Posen and South of Rogers City. The fire started on October 15, 1908. It raged on uncontrolled until it burned itself out near Alpena Michigan destroying everything in its path. I have read many stories about this disaster, and one can only imagine the horror and devastation that it caused. The little town of Metz was all but wiped off the map. Many lives were lost trying to escape the fire. Nothing could be done to stop it. A sad time in Northern Michigan.
That was a bad one, for sure. The Peshtigo fire in Wisconsin was very similar, with death estimates ranging from 1500-2500 or so. Only nature can stop fires the size of these, once conditions are right for them to get going.
