Its 13F right now and I have a strong draft going. Stove is fully closed and I have blazing secondaries; house is warm-stove room mid 70's rear bedrooms- low 60's

Currently my flue (probe thermo) is reading 725F and the stovetop is reading around 650F

I am wondering what are the max temps for a higher end dbl wall stove pipe and cast iron jotul stove?

What are your typical temps when your cruising along?

I would guess 1000 continuous on the pipe but that might very with different manufacturers. Don't know on the jotul.

I normally cruze around 500 with the blower on medium/low. Flue temp 8-900 without the pipe damper 7-850 with.

"Continuos duty rating for stove pipe " 1000°
    2100 for a short time."
    Bro Bart, hearth site

    I have a catalytic,
The thing that stii impresses me is the stove can be in the middle of a hot burn
Stove is hot. I mean don't think about touching hot
The double wall stove pipe 18" from the top of the stove I can touch,
a quick touch but , a touch not a tap.
On a lower burn I can hold my had on it a few seconds
    Multiples cooler than the stove.
Impresses me the cool temps of the stove exhaust.

I need to get some temp gauges

On the old non cat stove, I've seen the single wall pipe red hot.

Maybe some online searching for temp ratings.
Found ul 103, stove pipe temperature specs:

How long have you had the Castine and how well does it heat your home in these cold temps?

I certainly do not think those temperatures are anything to cause concern. Sounds like some great heat to me. Typical for us at 650 stove top will be 350-375 measured on horizontal run of single wall using a magnetic gauge.

This is my 3rd season with the castine.

    Pros:
    1. It looks awesome
2.It really pumps heat, especially when the secondary's are blazing
3.Convienant ash pan with its own door

    Cons:
1.Only 9" length if you want to burn N/S
2.Useable coals no more than 10 hrs. typically, sometimes 12

What does that convert to on a probe thermometer? Double that? When our double wall stove pipe probe thermometer gets close to 700 my son gets really nervous.)

No need to be nervous. What flue temps are you seeing with the IS?

Now you can tell him the stove pipe is engineered for continuous duty at 1000°,
    Tested at 1000° for hours (continous duty) , 1700° for 10 minutes & 2100° for 3 minutes

What your exhaust temps midway thru a burn ?
I can see it hot in the beginning of a new load, after the cat's engaged, should cool down a lot

Next time by the stove store, I'm gonna get an exhaust probe thermometer .
    Trouble is calibration.

We usually engage the cat at 600. The other evening I let the stove on a higher air setting than usual to get some more heat before the temps fell into the teens that night and then I went out for a while. My son smelled the paint curing smell and came down to find the probe temp at 750. He was convinced that was way too hot, because we had not really smelled paint curing since the first day or burning.

On a high burn it will ruin 650, it stays around 550-600 on a medium burn, and drops to 375 on medium low.

Midway through a burn its usually 350-400.

    That's a good thing !

I don't get the paint curing smell any more but I did for quite a while after going to double wall.
Now , when it gets real hot, the hot metal smell gets my attention quick.
Now I try to never leave the stove area with the door cracked open or the stat on max.

750° exhaust with the cat engaged ?

Yep. He's a great kid, just finished all his paperwork for his Eagle Scout. He really likes running this stove and pays close attention to details.

Well, when you go out and leave it on 75% air, it does heat up a bit. I should have cut it back to 50-60% but I was only going to be gone an hour. Stove top was up over 600, that's the hottest we've had it so far.

I burned a load of near kindling sized splits,
So much off gassing on medium high the cat probe almost pegged.
No stack temp so I've no idea how hot the exhaust was.
Stove was pretty new,got pretty hot , had the whole house smelling good.
Cranked the stat to low, & open some windows Learning curve. :)

The flue temps. were the main reason I sold my old Timberline and went to the BKK. I didn't like the 900 steady flue temps., especially when I wasn't at home. Those temps. did keep the flue clean though.

You got a probe on your pipe? (curious what the exhaust temps are running.)
Seems mine runs just warm when the cat's engaged. Double wall pipe though.
Even before I went to double wall, I could get it turning red with the door cracked & a raging fire,
but close the door & bypass & the pipe starts to cool down pretty quick.

Just remember a probe will give you a small air leak into your flue.

    Well that's not good.
Some kind of high temp sealant to put around it. ?
