I have never done it myself. Have any of you had the self fulfilling pleasure of cranking out a fresh batch all by yourself? How often do you do it? Ok enough jr high humor, maybe. Have any of you made your own fish bait? What species of fish were you targeting? What did you make it out of? Did it work? A guy at work was saying his dad used to make pork belly frogs for bass/walleye/northern fishing and color it with easter egg coloring, and saved it in a salt&garlic brine. It got me curious. I saw there was tripe at the store and I wonder if a person could use that in place and just cut small strips to make "nightcrawlers"?
Eggs from spawning trout in mesh. Gathered and sewed up edges of the mesh at the top, Unfortunately we've only done it once in the last few years.
When I was a kid we used to make dough ball to fish for catfish and carp in the Monongahela River across from the steel mills in Pittsburgh!! I have also made plenty of Flounder, Weakfish and Striper rigs in my day.
What are you trying to do put me out of business? Gotta use live bait! Here is 150k Wax Worms to look at( in the blue cups) the white flats each have 500 night crawlers in them. I usually have a little bait around! Gary
Beads, spinners, the shinier and more colorful the more the flounder like them. Still need a long piece of squid, or a fat juicy minnow, but I have caught some doormats on them!
When I was a kid the local tackle shop paid me $20/thousand. Guess where that money went? I Stihl have some of the lures I bought and that was almost 50 years ago.
By the way, that picture is a buddy of mines, he taught me everything/mostly everything that I know about fishing.
Besides tying egg sacks here and there for trout, I got into tying jigs for a while, also for trout primarily but they worked well for other species too. Always satisfying catching fish on stuff you make.
To my unlearned eyes it looks like those were tied with feathers. Did you ever mess with fur? A guy at work said something about horse tail hair baits sink and buck tail fur is hollow and floats but has never made a lure himself, is the fur float true?
Probably where the name bucktail originated, I will guess true!! Beautiful flies woody5506 !! I am half blind and drink way to much to mess with anything that intricate!!
I have messed with fur a little bit but for jigs really prefer marabou feathers. They just have this certain action and flow in the water that cant be beat. Most bigger bass jigs are tied with buck tail though. Maybe just for a bigger profile jig? Honestly I havent experimented a ton with different materials.
