Anyone have training? This is for recommendations in styles for my sister, age 47.
She is expressing a sincere interest, as is her fiancé. They live in Calif. and have been exposed to situations.
I told her to look into Krav Maga. I would train in that if I had somewhere close.
I'm good with Judo and Ju-Jitsu, but neither of those are what they should try. They need the no holds barred self defense stuff.
    Whatch'a think? JB

    Elderly at 47 YO ? o_O

The Mrs. took some martial arts years ago. Not even sure what it was now. She really enjoyed it
Now we use a different sort of self defense. Is that an option also?

Watching with interest. I'm turning 50 next month while I'm going to be visiting California. So not only am I elderly by the standards of this thread, I'm visiting a state where I might need to defend myself and can't practice my 2nd Amendment rights.

Wonder if I can get a Ka-bar self defense cane through the airport?

Or an unbreakable self defense tactical umbrella? image.jpg

The wife and I took martial arts for 8 yrs when we were younger. The school we went to was Karate & Kung Fu, it focused on self defense, no breaking boards and bricks. My first instructor was a navy seal, he said no one ever got attacked by a brick or board. They focused on real scenarios of likely attacks. The goal was to quickly take away the will and ability of the attacker to fight. " If a fight lasts longer than three seconds", someone is screwing around he used to say.:usa:

Look for a class centered on self defense, not just a specific art.

Here there is a bjj gym here that has a class that strictly does weapon (gun and knife) disarms, hand to hand, weapon retention, etc....and it's an over 40 year old class. That keeps the young punks out.

Combine that with some self defense firearms training, and that's what will keep you alive.

Different as in "go bang"? I think their options are much more limited in Kalifornia than in the free world.

At 47, most likely everyone will have to first be in a strengthening and conditioning class. You need your flexibility and strength. Then, you will also need your training and many hours of practice. You may not believe in them, but tournaments are an excellent way to use your skills before you are in a serious confrontation. Confidence is key along with ability.
Do not expect to be able to take a 6 month course and feel safe about yourself and others. Just like any other art, years long of study will increase your ability and usefulness of the self-defense system.
It is more than just learning to fight....

I figured the "elderly" @ 47 would get a few responses!
Concealed carry isn't an option for her. She needs training for hands on self defense. She also needs some situational awareness. I'd prefer her to just start something, and hope she enjoys it. Her fiancé will keep her going I'm sure, he and I see a lot alike.
I doubt she'd ever compete though. She saw what I went through when I was competing.
