Got one hell of a load of maple from a guy in town here. I've already taken about 8 cords of red oak from him, and he asked me if I wanted some chunked up maple that he had stacked behind his shed. It was cut last May, and I said sure! Got it home (in about 12 loads in my tiny pickup) and have been trimming it down and splitting what I can. A lot of it is good, hard wood that the moisture meter shows at about 22%. Some of it, especially closer to the bark, is showing some spalting. Just curious here: how far to you let that go before you throw it out? Is it worth trying to keep it dry until this season or am wasting my time?
Top covered that will last for quite awhile. If you want to get rid of it I’ll be right over. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
If/when it gets really soft and easy to stick a screwdriver in and super lightweight it doesn't burn very long. I have some that was stored in rounds a little too long. Some of it isn't very good firewood.
That probably won't burn in a hi tech northern stove. Need to send that down to GA, where we burn scraps and spalted wood......
If by "Hi tech northern stove" you mean "Old leaky smoke dragon" then I guess I'll throw them in there.
Knock the bark off that you can and it will stay longer. Scored a PU full of sugar maple last September. It was bucked and left in a stack from the May 2018 tornado here in New Haven county so 16 months and it was starting to go bad. I processed it right away and it was still good for the most part. Yours looks just fine. Great score BTW!
Your good to go.. Keep it dry as you can under cover and it will be ready to burn this fall most likely. I've had worse...
You have absolutely no concerns with that wood! It is prime and you can burn it next winter with no problem. The only requirement is to stack it off the ground and then top cover it. Then forget about it until next fall.
