Was hand splitting red maple this morning from Thursday's score and some of it had the bark come off when i split despite being green fresh cut. I had sugar maple do the same last Summer again fresh cut green. I wasnt trying to take the bark off it just separated as i split. Anyone else have this happen?

Yes, more often though, a few inches from this split hanging onto that split. But every now and then a whole sheet pop right off.

It will dry even quicker when the bark is off. Also it will make less mess bringing it inside, and supposedly less ash when burnt. Win win win

Been there done that, yes it happens from time to time. As others have said, it will dry faster.

Yup for sure. Saved the bark scraps for the firepit. Have a couple bundles still of maple bark from last year.

I find the red maple's bark is one of the most common bark to peel right off or fall off while splitting. Perfectly normal. I like peeling pine bark off when green. A little harder to pull off but thinner....and very satisfying. Kind of like peeling the blue plastic off of a new appliance. Heh heh.
