We just moved to New England from the northwest. We're considering switching to a new Douglas Fir. Can any of you folks from New England recommend a high heat low ash fir?

    Greetings HonestAbe,

    Welcome to the forum.

Have burned Olympus Douglas Fir (DF) here - best pellet burned here to-date. Almost zero ash, hot as rocket-fuel ..

Purchased from McManus Fuels in Barrington, NH - McManus Fuels - wood pellets - bagged coal

    Regards,
    Rob

Could come on back to Tacoma and load your pickup with a few tons. They're cheap here!

Be ready to spend about twice what you paid in the NW:bug:
Not sure where you are moving, but if you can get Vermonts they are a very nice pellet that can go toe to toe with the DF's for less $$

You beat me to it, Will.

Abe - bet you were paying, what - $200/ton for DFs in the west? Get ready for a bit of a surprise. The price around here (in general) is around $350/ton, LOL. Guess it costs a couple bucks to drive them across the country.

I would echo Will's comments. If they are available in your area, pick up some Vermonts. With the exception of North Idahos, I'm pretty sure I have tried every other DF pellet available in NE. The Vermonts are right on par with the best of them, and in fact perform better than some in my stove. And the upshot is you are supporting a small local NE company and saving yourself around $60 - $80 / ton to boot.

Welcome aboard, glad to have you here.

Thanks for the welcome folks. Good suggestion on the Vermonts. My neighbor said that Woodpellet.com has an Olympus fir pellet in their Okie fir bag plus Northern Warmth has a Bear Mountain pellet in their Supreme Fir bag. Will try the Vermonts for sure (when in New England act like a New Englander, eh?)

Even though it might not seem it to you, New England is a big place......might help to know roughly where you are in New England?

that is correct Abe..Northern Warmth Supreme Douglas Fir in a purple bag will be available in most of NE starting this summer...we also have some new Purcell Douglas Fir that the dealers seem to really like and their Energy Logs as well...along with our green bag Douglas Fir, blue bag super spruce and brown bag purely pine....

Vermonts are a very good pellet...but I think you will be able to see why the Supreme Douglas Fir commands the extra money if you get a chance to burn some. It's made by Bear Mtn in OR and considered by many the single best pellet made...but then again, I'm a bit bias... :)

    Welcome aboard Abe !!!

Doug Fir is going to be pricey around here, but if it what you really want its here for the $$. As others have mentioned, where are you located? That will help us help you.

    Area wise...
There are parts of Maine the size of Connecticut where practically no one lives....
