Started with a 16' camper trailer frame, yes I have 4 almost new tires to go on it. Bobbed the last 3 1/2' off, cut off all the extra brackets and camper crap (wiring and gas line), welded up log bunks, replaced tongue jack, have new lights and wiring to go on also. A tool box on the tongue. The logs will be just forward of center of the axles for just enough tongue weight. My truck has a 8x9' flatbed I will use to haul more logs or cut up tops. I parbuckle the logs onto the truck and will use same method to load this trailer. This will be for residential removals and other such small jobs where I'm only hauling one or maybe two trees. For logging out of woods I will use my gooseneck trailer which will hold twice as much as this one. I'm planning to use the upper hoist end of a receiver hitch mount crane which has a round dowel in the bottom and sits inside 2" .25" wall square tube. So I can put receivers on each side and load from either side by simply moving the hoist. Hoist has a 2k ATV winch. Hopefully that's enough. I use my 10k winch to load logs on the truck and it's overkill. I cut my logs 8' long. Makes 6 rounds 16".
I'll have it usable probably tomorrow evening, won't get to work on it much tonight. Will update with pics naturally!
You got room for a gusset tube at the base of your winch boom (at the bottom) so it won't bend under load?
Yea I'm not done with that part. Thinking I'll move the receiver tubes further outward for more room.
Made some progress tonight. Lights installed and wired. Brakes tested, will finish wiring them up tomorrow. Added beef and moved winch mounts outward. Added ramp hook ends on the bunks which will also serve as small log stops. Not lots of progress but better than nothing considering I didn't have much time on it.
Don't know how you look at projects like that but I like not having too much of a detailed plan... always liked to do it as I go sorta thing. Makes it more fun.
That's exactly how I do it too. I'm very detail oriented but I'm more creative if I do things on the fly. I've popped out some relatively impressive stuff in my days all things considered lol!
I always like watching welding projects to see if I can pick up new ideas. Lots of them on the forum. Kevin in Ohio has done some... and they're well photographed. Tons of cool ideas in them. Looking forward to seeing your log ramps in action.
My welding isn't great but most often holds good lol. I've got 14 years experience doing it but never as a job or certified anywhere. I don't enjoy it much it's just another skill that my passion requires. I love designing and building things. Gotta weld! Lol Kevin has some great fab skills!
