I ordered a trailer load of Lodgepole a few weeks ago and it showed up last Thursday. This gentleman mainly does corral poles and then sells rejects for firewood. It was a 16' trailer pulled by a dually with logs on the trailer and logs in the truckbed. Very nice material, no limbs and not many knots.

I'm down to the very bottom row of logs and split everything else. It was supposed to be 3 cords but looking more like 2.5 cords once split and stacked. For the cost of $350, it's still worth it. Maybe I can make a subtle comment on the next load to put a few more logs on.

Id speak up about the shortage.

I have to be careful because there's only two people who supply wood in log form here. This guy has much higher quality and less knots. I've already sold the load at $300, per cord. I'll try to be subtle about it and order another load, hoping it comes closer or above 3 cords.

The problem is I've started selling it. A guy retired in Casper and there aren't many people offering wood. I'm trying to deliver within 24-48 hours and I can't keep enough on hand. I have about 6 cords set aside for myself this winter. The rest will get sold.

You're absolutely right. More than one person would think. I'm always amazed at what two cords in bucked form look like in a pile.

Man am I bummed. I got everything stacked and split. It comes out to slightly less than 2.25 cords split and stacked at average 16". I have a 24"x 34"x 44" pallet bin of cutoffs tossed in loosely. Looking at 2 1/3 cords.

Maybe if approached correctly it won't become a negative. He might be using some off the wall formula/calculations. He might be happy to learn the true amount. He might at first be embarrassed, so don't press it. Be interesting to see if he adjusts anything when he learns his loads are near average at a little more than 2.25 cords. The other side of the coin, what happens if he quits supplying you?

Update: I ordered another load a few weeks ago and it arrived last week. I'd say about 25% more knotty on this load. It is brought in on a trailer with grapple and then a load in the back of a dually. I processed the trailer load and it's roughly 1.5 cords. Looking like I'll get 2-1/3- 2-1/2 cords again. I wanted to be sure I'm getting shorted before bringing it up. I'll get through the rest tomorrow, tally, and then bring it up to the guy who delivers. I asked last time again what it should amount to and he said 3 cords.

I would approach the person and explain your dilemma. Utilizing 2 different loads you came up a 1/2 cord short both times. Explain you are going to be a buyer of more loads than the normal person and to your bottom line the numbers have to match up. His price is roughly $116.17 per cord so if short, ask to pay him $58.33 less for the loads he is loading.

I was out that way one time. You'ins have a LOT of Lodgepole over there. I stood on high ground looking at miles and miles of them below me at one point. Those poor poor squirrels...nothing to eat but pine seeds!

That is nice when you can get wood with no limbs on it. When up in the mountains and falling trees probably 50% of the cutting is limbing.

I would say something to this person about the shortage. Just because there are not a lot of people suppling logs like that is no reason to be cheated.

I reached out to the supplier about the shortage. I got 2 cords split and stacked from the second load and 3 wheel barrow fulls of the little ends. Again, these are supposed to be 3 cords. I only have his facebook and no phone number. He's read the message but unfortunately hasn't responded. I'm hoping I hear back, I left the message with just facts and asked him how he'd like to resolve it.

    Here was my message....
"I wanted to reach out. I finished splitting and stacking the most recent load and it came out to 2.25 cords. 1.5 cords from trailer load and 3/4 from the truck portion. The first batch I received measured 2-1/2 cords and I thought it was odd that it didn't come out to 3 cords but thought maybe I had counted wrong. After the second load coming out to the same amount, I wanted to let you know. Let me know what you'd like to do. I'd like to regularly order in these logs."

Received this reply "Thanks for your feedback." One of those polite F-U's I take it.
