Hey all! It's been a minute since I've been active around these parts, but with spring just around the corner I'm getting the itch for hoarding.
Our dog groomer got in touch with me and said she was having a couple trees taken down, and I could have the wood if I wanted. I asked what kind, and she replies "Not sure. Something that starts with an 'L'."

    Now my interest is piqued.
"Locust?" I ask. "I think so, maybe..." she waffles.

So I head out with the saws and take a truckload. It's definitely not any species that I'm familiar with, so I'll let all you experts chime in. Happy hoarding!

My app says that's cottonwood. I don't rely on it w/o leaf pics though.

Does not look like any locust I've ever dealt with. Not sure what it is though.

Looks like white mulberry to me. Still an excellent score!

That's mullberry. It's the next best thing to locust.

To confirm, it’s Mulberry, split a piece open and leave it in the sunlight. In a few days, it will turn dark brown/red/chocolate.

I don't see it as BL. I've cut fresh trees that size and the bark on yours isn't quite a match. I'm thinking mulberry as well. Try wolverines advice. The heartwood will turn darker in a short amount of time.

Either way some good stuff you got there RK. Nice to see you again.

I'm not sure how you have a mulberry tree in your yard and not know it. They're a mess once berries start dropping.

I didn't know it because it wasn't in my yard.
