I saw a picture of a similar coffee table gun display and really wanted to make one for the guns my father in law gave me. I think this will look great in the man cave/stove room. It's close to done now, next step is to make the top. The top will basically be a frame with glass top and battery operated rope lighting inside the lid to show off the guns. Inside now is an M1 Garand and an sks. Under the guns is an ammo belt that he gave me as well. I added a few extra spots so that I can add more guns if I need to. Another thing that will be added to this eventually is a flag. My father in law is a Vietnam vet and we will be adding the flag from his funeral to this display one day. That won't be soon but it will have a fitting home.
Nice idea swags, that's going to make a nice table! I'm confused though, I don't see an M1 Garand rifle there, just an SKS and what looks like a Soviet M44 (7.62 x 54). I happen to have some nice M1 accessories I'm selling if interested.
Maybe I had it wrong on what I thought he gave me. I'm not much of a gun expert at all. I'll look up the m44, might be what I have. It is a 7.62x54
Hey, can't be an expert at everything, but "you are da man" in my book when it comes to big buck bow hunting! I just happen to have been an old military gun collector years back, had 24 different ones at one point. I owned several of the Mosin-Nagant rifles. Your M44 was the last variant of that line of rifles. I'm guessing from the looks of it that it might not be "Russian" as their stocks tended to be stained with a very slight reddish tinge to it. Looks more like a Hungarian/Polish or other Soviet satellite country gun. The markings on it will tell. I've sold/traded all of those rifles over the past decade except for the most accurate one of them all, a 1942 Swedish M38 Mauser, the Husqvarna referenced in my signature.
Nice looking rifle. I have one of the m91/30 versions, and a M38 carbine. How to Recognize Different Variations of Mosin Nagant Rifles
The mosin-nagant rifles are a delight to shoot, my brother in law collects them and I myself own a Russian m44. I deer hunt with it it's not nearly so nice as that one but it does the job. Nice guns for sure
swags if you don't have an ammo stash for that m44, I'd suggest starting to stock up. The russian surplus import ammo is now banned, and commercial production ammo is rising fast in price. Catch it on sale, and you can still get non corrosive ammo for around 40 cents but I'm afraid that won't last long. The 7.62x54r wont be"cheap" to shoot here in a few years. Those guns are a blast to shoot! Literally! Shoot it at night, you'll see
The American made Mosin-Nagants were the best of them all. A lot of folks don't know about these. Finely crafted by Remington and Westinghouse with black walnut stocks, there is an interesting history to these I've linked below. I had a Westinghouse that I'd found mixed in with a big batch of Soviet ones at a gun show years back. American troops leaving for Russia in 1919 with their American M91. The American Mosin Nagants
Hey Swags, this is why I was confused about your comment about a Garand being in the case. Back in 11/14 you told us about this gun. I searched for the thread and found it, you identified it as being a "Polish" M44. New gun | Firewood Hoarders Club You obviously knew what it was back then, so I figured that you actually had a Garand and just had your comments/photos mixed up above. That's why I told you I had some nice accessories for an M1, figured you had one of those too. While I could not resist making my joke about John Garand rolling in his grave, I was not trying to make fun of your "lack of expertise" or anything. Sure hope you did not take it that way. I'm 60, probably twice your age, and grew up during that time of our history where everyone knew what a Garand was and the difference it made to our troops in WWII. I don't expect younger folks of your era to know things like that, the "black rifle" took center stage many years ago. Its just that calling a Mosin Nagant a Garand is like calling an old Volkswagen Beetle a Farrari Spider, I felt compelled to set the record straight. I owned two Garands (rebarreled from 30-06 to 308) that I used to shoot service match competitions with, that's "open sights" at 200, 300, and 600 yards! Took first place out of 52 shooters at a match once back in "95". My eye sight was better than 20/20 back then. Fast forward to today, remember how a missed a doe at 70 yards with my daughters open sighted 20 ga Rem 1100 a few weeks back, age will do that to you! By the way, if you read that previous thread you will see that I offered you some really special hunting ammo for that M44 back then. The offer still stands buddy.
Sounds good, I didn't even look back at that thread. I don't know much about these guns and thought I remembered what it was. Had it wrong but don't feel bad about the correction. I'm glad I know what it really is now. That'll help me remember! Might take you up on some of that ammo
Yep definitely an M44. Its a nice one!! Mos in nagants are expensive here now since people started buying them up cause they were cheap. I have a beat up M44 that I got back when they were cheap. I think it was $45. Hate they put the ban on ammunition.b still was some decent stuff coming here at decent prices. Thats why people liked the MNs as they are similar to the .30/06 in power but ultra cheap to shoot with corrosive surplus.
