Anyone on the forum have one of these winches or know of someone who does? I have two saw options to power it with. My two husky's - a 570 4.9 HP and 390xp 6.5 HP and I wondering if the 570 is adequate or should I use the 390? I want to yard logs with it. The small winch that I use to get blocks onto the splitter table is not standing up to yarding logs.

For a pull like this, the small winch does good but for something more difficult it is not so good.

I used a lewis winch with a old XL12 on it and it pulled some pretty good size logs I am sure your smaller saw will work good it would easily pull that log in picture if you have to purchase a winch you could alsoget a 8000# electric winch for less than a lewis and mount it to the splitter ?? then you would not tie up your saw just a thought JB:salute:

We use to have one at work that was on a johnsered 670 and it pulls more than you would think.

IME electric winches are prone to quitting when you need them. Think thermal overload kicks them out during the pull. The gas powered winch either moves the load or not. A Lewis winch will pull a lot with a fairly small cc engine. Ask Scotty Overkill what his will do. I'm a fan of gas powered winches personally.

I love having my chainsaw winch, it stays in my truck toolbox now, I have an old Stihl 041 powerhead mounted to it. It's not a Lewis, but another well-made similar version , it's from the 70's or early 80's. It'll pull some weight!

We used it at Backwoods Savage's GTG a few years back to pull some sizeable back leaning oaks over, it did it with ease.

I use it for dragging logs onto my trailer from time to time as well as snatching trees over. It's pretty impressive.

Here's a pic of my big hydraulic winch I use to skid & yard with.

I read a lot about dc winches heating up and killing batteries.
This one will pull logs onto a trailer all day and charge the battery once a week.

I think it’s the cheap Chinese ones that have issues.
If it can pull this log it’ll pull anything you want to drag to a splitter.

That's a good winch there. I've not seen that available here. Nice set up.

No doubt you've read about the winches they put on ATV's. Yes, you can burn those up quickly if not careful. Most folks don't read the manuals (surprise!) but the manual clearly says to not run them for but a minute or two and then letting them cool. In short, they are meant to pull an atv out of a mud hole but that's about it. I know folks who think they can pull logs up a hill over and over but then get ticked because none of them will hold up. Shoot, they are about the same as a starter motor. Run them constant and see how long they last.

Yep I read a lot of the tests mostly on midsize or larger units. Some of them perform terrribly. I recall one that had a duty cycle of one minute then a cool off period of 30 minutes. Killing batteries with 100 feet of pull. All sorts of crazy stuff. I was actually quite bummed after reading all this stuff concerning my trailer build. Went through with it anyway and am very happy with that winch. Used it all July and August with no overheating or battery drain. Usually cut a log, drag it onboard then cut another. Gives it a little rest in between. Has never skipped a beat. A little faster pull than the average too. A lot of winches use small horsepower motors and very low gears to get the pull weight. IMO that’s an important concern or you’ll be waiting all day to pull a log.

It’s an older Superwinch S-5500. Don’t think they made a lot of them or for very long. Not much info on the web. More S-5000’s kicking around.
Even Superwinch decided to begin competing with the cheap Chinese winches and started changing the specs on many of their models. It’s very important to compare the specs on these things. I started comparing just to find a faster line speed and after some looking figured out exactly what was happening with these winches ;) A race to the bottom.

This ones not the fastest but it’s not bad. It’s convertable to 24 volts for faster speed. After reading how fast some of these things chew up batteries I jumped on it. New in box but older on CL. Havent considered the expense of 24 volts since I started using it.

That's why I didn't recognize it, nice find. That thing has a nice line speed. I went gas/hydraulic for the reasons you noted. 2 speed winch with the Honda engine. Good skidding/yarding setup. I couldn't find an electric that had a continuous duty cycle. Yours is very impressive.

Who makes that? Have a link?
I’m dreaming about putting a winch on my tractor. Tractor is six volts though. Electric isn’t my thing and I know it’s supposedly easy to convert to 12. Keep coming up with the old if it ain’t broke don’t mess with it :)

Good point on the overheating of the small winch. From now on, I will yard one block or log and give the winch a cool down period while the block or log gets bucked, split and loaded before yarding another!
