Been hand sharpening all year on my portable and bench vises. Now it's time to touch up all my chains. I like the electric sharpener for this. Gets everything square and true so to speak! I use a restored vintage Wilton Bullet bench vise...a Stihl portable vise...and a cheap..but surprisingly good Chicago Electric (Harbor Freight) electric grinder.
So what do you guys use ?
Please excuse my messy workbench....ive got alot of projects in works lol.

Been cutting firewood out of an old overgrown treeline. Love finding old barbed wire and other fun chain wrecking items !

I have an Oregon and a Northern Tool. The Northern Tool is not too bad after some modifications I read about in another forum.
The Oregon is used for the cutter and the Northern Tool does the depth , This way I don't have to keep switching wheels.

I am actually pretty faithful in keeping them sharp with a file so the grinders only get used if I hit metal or maybe that occasional rock.

I have them mounted to a plate that bolts to a rolling bench that also has the bandsaw blade grinder as well , If it needs to get used I can just roll it out , use it and then roll it back out of the way. I'm running out of space in my shop !!

After a couple years square filing, I broke down and sold a saw to fund the purchase of a square grinder. One of the best decisions I’ve made.

Pics of the raker grinder? I don’t think I’ve ever seen one.

Got my bench grinder mounted up high now which I really like. I also have been really practicing at hand filing lately. I still suck at both (chain tends to not be sharpened evenly and doesn’t always cut straight) but I’m getting better.

Thanks! It’s MUCH easier on my back now and I can really observe what’s going on with the chain.

I was sharpening this morning...all crunched down trying to see...I said self....there has to be a better way. Then you came along and showed ! So thank you ! Sometimes the easiest solution doesn't cost money...it just takes effort !

And yes..a grapple !! Saves the back ! I don't even pick up individual limbs anymore..I just grapple them lol ! One of the better things I've done :)
Since the wind blows alot...on nice days...we cut in like 6 to 8 foot lengths...grapple them out of the woods..and stack. That way we can process into firewood on any day we feel like it...no matter the weather and wind..with no risk of a tree falling on us ..or the woods getting rutted up and muddy. And..since we don't drag...theres less dirt to cut into...less sharpening .

It was the Northern Tool one they used to sell. I think it’s Roughneck or something. Basically a chinese clone of an Oregon

It all came over time......a looong time!
I can't tell you how long I've had the left grinder. I bought the breaker and spinners along with the rail grinder around 30 years ago.

So is this Oregon grinder any good? 310-120

Oregon 310-120 Bench Mini-Grinder / Sharpener For Chainsaws
I found it for less somewhere.

Mostly have 3/8 chain, but some mm icro pico that is stock on the ms170 and..325 on the 029s.

Being Oregon, it should be quality, no? I don't sharpen a ton of chains, but I would rather do it myself and save time and $ from dropping chains off at the guy I have do them now.
