Spotted this when we arrived at stepdaughters yesterday. Only have seen these a hand full of times in my life. Never have scrounged any. No cheating app users! Not the best pics but one should give it away. Ill post a bark pic tomorrow night and the answer on Tuesday.
The leaf looks like a few different things but the fruit narrows it down quite a bit. Another vote for hackberry.
I will wait for the bark pic to be 100% sure but my guess is hackberry Hackberry bark looks like a pail of moving nite crawlers
You won’t really like it buZZsaw BRAD. Dries reasonably fast, Mediocre BTU’s, And in my experience, only C grade splits at best!
Pretty much spot on... But I like the stuff. Always a good lighter for hedge, shoulder season and weekend burns...
Here's the bark pic. Zoomed pic as it was surrounded by a good tangle. Hackberry it is. I vaguely recall dad cutting one when i was a kid and being fascinated by the warty bark on the one growing in the front yard. If i did cut it it would be for the novelty score.
Yep hackberry! I’d be curious to know if the ones from a more timbered environment grow any straighter. Around here there’s never more than about an 8 inch length of the tree that is remotely straight, be it branches or main trunk. Hence the C grade splits, always have a curve to them and don’t stack neatly but they can get pretty big around here
The only i recall is the tree in my sisters front yard that is rather straight. If i remember ill get pics next time im there. The tree in the picture is on the smaller side.
