I had a very productive morning on Friday. Got 3 tractor loads cut, split, hauled and stacked in a couple hours. All good white ash. I really enjoy splitting this by hand - it is like a warm knife through butter!
Nice haul! I split some poplar Saturday that seemed to fall apart when the blade hit it. Big contrast from the red elm which was all fed directly to the splitter.
Woody, that is a great size tree for making firewood. Easy to work with and not so heavy as to ruin your back. In addition, yes, it splits like a charm. Good work!
Ash is awesome. Those rounds look purdy. I agree with Backwoods, that is a perfect size tree to work on. The ash I worked on last weekend were half that size and very time consuming.
But still very good firewood. We have lots of those small ash trees left as we cut most of the largest dead ones first. We have a few decent sized trees left to cut yet but most are quite small and some don't even need splitting. Still good firewood.
Up till last year I just didn't take a tree much bigger than that. Had so much down wood in Pop's woods I didn't need to, so I saved on the back. Like it. Nowadays I'm rolling monsters up to the splitter, but the btu's still help make up for it....
Very true Backwoods! They add up slowly, but my two-track was starting to thaw out-- making much of my woods off limits. Cutting little stuff isn't my favorite, but it is better than not cutting anything.
Much bigger than that and they get to be a bit of work to split, and move around. Nice work Woody! I bet your snow went away pretty well today.
I haven't been in the woods today, but most of the snow in the yard and fields went away today! Temperature showed 61 while I was in Green Bay today!
