IMG_0668.JPG I'm gonna leave this to the experts and I am not one. Do these trees need some kind of mechanical assistance to be able to bring these trees down or wood wedges be OK. Review the pictures of all of those widow makers. It seems like Mother nature has been working on them for many years. I was only allowed to post this picture all others had a security error

Make sure you have proper PPE. Especially, a good helmet. Saw vibrations could knock one down, depending on how rotted they are.

Looks like a fun tree to fell, with a spotter. Find its lean and go that way. Hopefully, there's nothing just out of frame, to damage.

Looks like a saw and wedge or two would get it done from where I sit.

Trees that have been dead a while can be challenging. Pounding wedges can break the hinge and gravity takes over and you have to make sure you run in the right direction. I would put a rope in it and tension it for a safety measure. Than it can only go towards the rope or left or right. You will know which direction to walk away. If it gets hung you have a rope to drag it out. Good luck and wear a hard hat.

The majority of the trees I fall are dead. Only once (so far) has it not worked as I wanted. Was trying to go against the natural way that it wanted to go. I was using wedges. It ended up on the fence I was trying to avoid.
Never really knew why It didn’t work until just now reading the post from Chud I’m sure the hinge broke and it went back the way it was coming from.

I probably should get a helmet.

Please do! My helmet has saved my skull a couple times. My Grandfather died from a widow maker to the head. That was a lesson I actually learned from an other's experience.

Definitely a helmet. Sorry to hear about your Grandfather passing that way. Too many good people over the years lost. With all we have available now with PPE there is no good excuse. I find myself slipping every now and then without chaps or goggles. More than one trip after I am into some cutting that I need to make a trip back to the garage.

I had a dead cherry limb fall the other day in a windstorm. It was solid and drove into the ground a few inches. I have a tree company coming out to give me a price for removal. Be careful if you do, but if it doesn't see right make a call to the pros.
