Another Facebook Marketplace red/white oak score. This one was just under 15 minutes from home, luckily. Some decent logs piled up, the only drawback being the dirt on them and the direct sunlight beating down. I made off with some nice oak, but that was enough for today. If there’s anything left later this week I’ll go back. The bigger logs are buried at the bottom.
Nice score! I live in a highly wooded area and hardly anyone gives away wood. I’m always on the lookout though.
The post-grilling slump got the best of me and I went and got another load of what was on top. Shortly after I left, the homeowner messaged my coworker saying thanks for getting some of it out of there, but several others are interested and he wants to be fair about it. Good enough for me
There’s no shortage of forest here either, but finding free stuff and beating others to it is very hit or miss. In some places the hoarders swoop in like vultures on a fresh carcass. Other places, scores will rot in place with nobody really taking notice.
Good stuff again there Eric. Ill take Goldilocks oak over big oak any day! Did your teenager give you a hand?
Got too much of this standing dead to deal with scrounging at the moment. But I’m enjoying thread like this and making notes of that day should every come.
He did on the first trip anyway. The sun was beating on us hard this morning and by the time we loaded up to leave, we were both lightheaded and chugging water. It was only 70! Still, I’m no fan of firewooding in between May-September
That’s a nice resource to have. I only live on a postage stamp sized lot and already took most of the problematic trees down. Scrounging is fun, but heading to the back 40 and cutting your own is rather special.
I’m not too far away from where you are, and it was about as “hot” A 70° day as it could be. I spent most of the day splitting wood in my driveway and mowing the lawn. I definitely didn’t lose any of my tan today
The sun makes a world of difference. The super hot and humid days I was firewooding was spent in the shade. In the sun, forget it, not happening. Does he seem to like hoarding with you?
To a point, yes. He enjoys spending time with me at the very least. He likes being able to swing the maul and bust something open. He’s taking an interest in the maintenance part too. Real curious about engines, which I can show him everything I know in about 5 minutes
