Anyone here have a cutting board they love the size and weight of? (Not an endgrain butcher block) Right now my son (13) and I are making one out of walnut I logged and had sawn 12 years ago, some cherry I pulled from the log landing I have been using on the Big Green Egg and some maple and hickory I picked up at Menards. If it turns out it will be a Christmas gift from us to the better half. We will then proceed with making him a storage box he wants. Leaning towards 10h x 12 d x 16L. Separate question has anyone ever made pull drawers on a small box like this?
Seems like all the guys I talk to that make them are limited by the size of their planer...although I suppose you could make one without a planer!
Thats true. You could make 2 pieces that fit through the planer then glue them together. An open end drum sander would allow for twice the capacity, but they're pretty spendy...
I think about 14x20 x1 1/4 would be the ultimate cutting board. Finger grooves along the sides would make it easier to pick up.
There was another member that made quite a few cutting boards by laminating different woods together. He even posted videos of the process. I can't remember who that was now.
I have scrounged some material to try some 3D cutting boards ; when I get some free time. Recently there was a quick piece on This Old House that I caught while channel surfing , I thought they were pretty cool. Several youtube videos of them and some different ways to go about it. Currently trying to finish a couple other projects before I tackle that one , right now I need to finish my storage bench that I will use for firewood instead of the ugly plastic bin in the corner.
I created a new cutting board last year after our 40yr old board was just getting too thin. This is purple heart/walnut/hickory. The inlay is walnut/hickory. I cut a lip on it so it fits the sink. This is really handy when cutting a lot of stuff. Waste is quickly moved to the sink for disposal. I treat it w/medical mineral oil. Really works well. Have since learned a lesson the hard way: do not try to laminate purple heart. It has a kind of oil in it. Now a year later, it is starting to separate. ....so, golly gee wezz....I'll just have to make a new board this winter.
I recall Shawn Curry making some pretty spiffy boards, but he has been AWOL from FHC for quite some time now...
Beautiful work on the boards! I kinda like the sink lip but that would make it to easy for others in the house to put junk down the disposal (big pet peave of mine after numerous sink clean outs) Will post some pictures once I get all my strips cut.
Yes! It should be unlawful to label those wipes as flushable!!! The ARE NOT flushable or biodegradable!!
